You Have Been... April Fooled!
I think most readers of KryptonSite should be used to this by now...
Either way, as far as I know, none of the headlines or articles on the KryptonSite News Page today were or are accurate. No announcement has been made about Episode #200; Bridget Regan won't be appearing as Diana Prince (but wouldn't that be AWESOME?); No plans yet for Tom on Michael's sitcom; Batgirl continues; Season 11 isn't a done deal; and saddest for me... no plans for a Season 8 companion book, though I'd love to write one.
Additionally, the list of Season 10 titles is completely fabricated. Last year's list sadly had only one title of the 22 correct (that would be "Kandor"); will this year's be more accurate?
In past years, SOME April Fool's gags have come true, by coincidence. These include:
2002 - Lana's Parents Return (happened in "Void"); Chloe Sullivan Is Lois Lane (sort of happened, in "Delete" and "Hex")
2003 - Ian Somerhalder To Guest Star As Bruce Wayne (he didn't, but he did play "Adam Knight"); Chloe To Get A Spin-Off (do the Chloe Chronicles count?)
2004 - Who's Going article with a picture of Pete; Mr. Mxyzptlk Coming To Smallville (happened in "Jinx"); Lexana: It's Real (see Season 6)
2005 - Gough & Millar Prepare Young Aquaman Pilot (seriously, I didn't know!); Dean Cain on Smallville (happened in "Cure")
2006 - Christopher Eccleston To Appear As Zod (so it wasn't Eccleston, but Zod did show in Season 9); "Bizarro" Is Coming (it happened!); Justin Hartley To Guest In Season 6 As Aquaman (so he showed up as Green Arrow instead)
2007 - Smallville Returns To The WB (TheWB.com now exists!); Tom Welling Signs Through Season 9 (if only we knew...); Clark's Kryptonian Mother Lara To Appear (she did, but with a different actress than we suggested) Season 7 accurate predicted titles included "Bizarro" and "Kara."
2008 - Rosenbaum Out For Season 8 (why did that one have to be true?); "Legion" listed as a predicted Season 8 episode title
2009 - Annette O'Toole Returning (it happens this year!); The BBC Plans Their Own Version Of Smallville (have you SEEN Merlin?)
Special thanks goes out to Nerf from the Shadowtales forum for the Season 8 companion graphic.
Were you fooled? Probably not, but talk about it on the KryptonSite Forum, anyway. :) I'd love some feedback... and don't worry, KryptonSite will be back to normal tomorrow, just in time for a NEW episode! - Craig

Here's the press release:
The CW Network has announced that its hit series “Smallville” will return in the fall of 2010 for a momentous tenth season.
“Smallville,” a modern retelling of the Superman legend, stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent. The series moved to Friday nights this season, where it currently ranks as network television’s #1 show in its time period among men 18-34 and men 18-49. Additionally, “Smallville” has dramatically improved The CW’s ratings performance in its Friday 8:00-9:00p.m.time period by 67% among adults 18-34 (1.5/6), 200% in men 18-34 (1.8/7), 75% in adults 18-49 (1.4/5), 183% in men 18-49 (1.7/6) and 74% in total viewers (3.12million).
“Smallville” joins the five previously announced series – “The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” “Supernatural” and “America’s Next Top Model” – which will all return for another season on The CW.
“Smallville” was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (“Shanghai Noon,” “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”), based on the DC Comics characters. Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson serve as executive producers, along with James Marshall, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola. The series is produced by Tollin/Robbins Productions, Millar/Gough Ink and Warner Bros. Television. SUPERMAN was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
TV Guide is reporting that Tom Welling, Justin Hartley, Cassidy Freeman, and Erica Durance will all be returning. No official word yet on Allison Mack or Callum Blue. |

Renewal Prospects "Looking Really, Really Good"
Although Smallville was not on the initial list of shows renewed for another season on The CW, EW's Michael Ausiello has some possible good news for folks who'd like to see the show fly for another year:
Question: Crazed fans like myself desperately need an update on Smallville’s renewal. How’s it looking? Any idea what the hold-up is? —Ryan
Ausiello: It’s looking really, really good. And the hold-up is due to boring stuff like contracts and money.
So there you have it: It sounds like if every contract can be finalized (Tom allegedly signed through Season 10 last year), and if The CW sees that the show can be done at a budget in which the show still turns a profit, the show could be back after all. Geoff Johns Named Creative Director Of DC Comics
DC Comics is reorganizing, and part of those changes includes the installation of a new Creative Director who should be very familiar to Smallville fans - Geoff Johns.
Johns had this to say about his appointment at the DCU Source blog:
There is no place on Earth that has a more diverse and deep universe of characters and worlds. From Atrocitus to Y: The Last Man. My love for DC started when I first saw the Flash take on Captain Cold in the Challenge of the Super-Friends. I never ate my Honeycomb that fast. It when I bought my first comic books in 1985, including Crisis on Infinite Earths, alongside my Super Powers figures and only grew over the years until I broke into the industry myself.
So what does a “Chief Creative Officer” do? Well, I still wear t-shirts and write and go to conventions, but I’ll be doing a whole lot more too.
Under the leadership of Jim and Dan, I’ll continue writing and giving my creative input as I have been in comic books. But expanding onto that, Diane’s asked me to take our comic book world, embrace it (as I do) and use it to lead the creative charge on bringing it all to film, toys, television, video games, animation and beyond. The Justice Society appearing on Smallville was only the beginning.

John Schneider Stars In Spike TV "Back Nine" Pilot
Smallville patriarch John Schneider, who played "Jonathan Kent" in the show's first 100 episodes, has been cast to star in a SpikeTV pilot called "Back Nine."
Schneider will play the lead character, a washed-up former U.S. Open golf champion. He has a sex-addicted caddy named Tiger who was so named before the Tiger Woods drama last year; it'll be curious to see if the name changes.
If picked up as a series, Back Nine would join other sports-themed SpikeTV series including Blue Mountain State which features Sam Jones III (Pete Ross) and Alan Ritchson (Aquaman) in its cast. |

Christopher Nolan To Oversee New Superman Film?
Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily has posted the bombshell that a new Superman movie might still be a possibility, with The Dark Knight's Christopher Nolan in a supervisory role.
The project is still "in the early stages of development," but if it happens, it will likely be put through the process before some of the Superman rights revert to Jerry Siegel's heirs.
Chances are good that Nolan and the other filmmakers will take a new approach rather than using previous Superman actors such as Brandon Routh or Tom Welling in the role.

Smallville's "Absolute Justice" Ratings Improve
Smallville had a bit of an uptick over previous weeks with the two-hour special and interestingly, the show did even better in the 9PM hour.
Still surprising that repeats of House and Law & Order did better, though.
The CW is happy with the ratings. Here's what they had to say:
A 2-hr SMALLVILLE provided The CW with our best Friday night since Sept 2008 in all key categories, including adults 18-49 (1.2/4), men 18-49 (1.5/5), adults 18-34 (1.1/4), men 18-34 (1.3/5) and total viewers (2.8mil).
In terms of Smallville episodes, this is the highest rated Smallville of the season in total viewers, adults 18-49 (tie) and men 18-49.
Competitively, Smallville ranked #1 from 8-10pm in men 18-49.”

The CW Orders Tom Welling Pilot
"TV MoJoe" (Josef Adalian) is reporting that the TV series based on the novel Cheer will be ordered as a presentation pilot to shoot soon for The CW. Variety is now referring to the project as Hellcats, and it is noteworthy to Smallville fans as it is produced by Tom Welling.
Tom's not the only superhero with his own show in the works - The CW has also picked up another presentation pilot, HMS, produced by Heroes' Hayden Panettiere.
Finally, there's Betwixt, a series based on a novel where "changelings in an urban setting are responsible for saving humans from evil." A full pilot will be shot for that one.
These projects follow the already-announced La Femme Nikita update and Amy Sherman-Palladino's The Wyoming Project.
Once all pilots are done and all deals are made, The CW will announce their full Fall schedules in May. |

Big News: Michael McKean (Perry White) Is Returning To Smallville, Too!
We didn't think the news would be very far off: Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is now also reporting that Annette O'Toole's husband, Michael McKean, is ALSO returning to Smallville later this season, playing the role of someday-editor of the Daily Planet, Perry White.
Perry has not been seen on Smallville since Season 3.
"We finally get to see the legendary introduction between Perry White and the intrepid Lois Lane," executive producer Brian Peterson teases. I know speaking for myself, I'm more concerned with seeing what Perry thinks of Clark's progress.
Ausiello has also gotten confirmation on when both Martha Kent and Perry White will be returning - it will be the next to last episode of the season, episode #9.21, for which we do not yet have an episode title. |

Smallville Season 10: Things Are Looking Even Brighter...
Today The CW held their part of the Television Critics Association press tour, and several journalists caught up with CW Entertainment President Dawn Ostroff to discuss the prospects of Smallville going for a tenth season.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello, Ostroff sounds optimistic about the show's chances, and seems pleased with the show creatively. But regarding whether or not the show will be back for another year, Ostroff says the decision will come in May. "[The producers] haven’t even pitched us the last episodes yet, so we haven’t even gotten to how we’re going to deal with the last episode and whether it’s a season finale or series finale," Ostroff said to Ausiello. "But right now, I think it’s just a season finale."
Ostroff also made chances sound good in an interview with IGN's Eric Goldman. "If the show doesn't come back, I think it will be a sort of really last minute decision, because either development [for new series] was great or the show wasn't doing as well on Friday nights. But we still have a whole half a season to go before we have to determine that," she said.
So, while no official decision has been announced, at least things ARE sounding good. |

(Before anyone gets mad about "spoilers on the main page," keep in mind that site policy allows for things that are being discussed and publicized in mainstream media to be talked about here. So please don't be mad!)
A new interview at the Huffington Post of all places talks to Michael Shanks about his upcoming 2-episode role as Hawkman in the episode "Society." The article notes that the episodes will air on January 21 and January 28, though those dates have not yet been confirmed by the studio.
Here's a quote from the very revealing interview: "Hawkman being the alpha in the Justice Society, being someone who...has made some missteps along the way, can or could represent a type of mentor character to Clark in his leadership abilities with his burgeoning team members of the Justice League. He represents a character that has a lot of wisdom to pass down to this next generation, so there is a strong possibility that once the initial phase wears off that there will be a coming together of those two to paint a larger portrait of the future, of what Clark has available to him and what his options are."

Steve Bacic Is The "Dark Archer"
KryptonSite has learned that Steve Bacic has landed the role of Oliver's mentor "The Dark Archer" in the upcoming episode "Disciple."
The name and the face may be familiar to Smallville fans as Bacic played one of the victims of Jeremy Creek in the very first episode of Smallville back in 2001. Fans of the sci-fi genre may recognize him from recurring roles in Andromeda and Stargate. He also played a not-so-Beastly Dr. Henry McCoy in X2. Soon he'll be appearing as "Dr. Sexy" in an episode of Supernatural.

DC Comics' Superman: Secret Origin: Geoff Johns Creates The "Ultimate" Smallville Comic
Hitting comic book stores this week in the first issue of a new comic book mini-series titled Superman: Secret Origin. The book is written by Geoff Johns (writer of Smallville's "Legion") and has some special treats for Smallville fans within.
The first issue takes place during Clark's childhood, and folks like Lana and Pete are present. [SOME SPOILERS MAY FOLLOW] The added thrill is that there are some references to the TV show that didn't usually exist in comic book continuity - for example, the reaction that sets off Clark's heat vision. There's also a reference to a "Chloe S." for those who look closely enough, and I still think Jonathan Kent looks like John Schneider in a few places. You'll also notice that the barn and the farm house look a little familiar, and Clark takes on a blue shirt/red jacket combo that will "blur" the line between TV and comics continuity.
Either way, it's a fantastic comic, and it almost makes me wish there was a monthly comic book series like this which explored Clark's younger days and retold Smallville from the comic book universe's perspective - involving Lana, Chloe, Pete, Lex and the rest. Check it out in good comic book shops everywhere. |

Is Michael Rosenbaum Returning? The Latest...
Some buzz to come from DragonCon was that Michael Rosenbaum would be returning to Smallville in the near future as Lex. Unfortunately, this is not the case, as related by Michael himself in his Twitter account. Here's what he had to say:
"On the Smallville comments? Not gonna happen. Creating my own stuff now and very happy. Sorry to bum ya out."
Hopefully some deal will be made to bring Michael back before all is said and done. Not only would it be awesome to see Michael interacting with Tom Welling and the rest of the cast again - it would be fun to see him interacting with Cassidy Freeman's Tess... and Smallville without Lex Luthor is like peanut butter without jelly. It still tastes decent, but it's even better to have both at the same time. |

Dawn Ostroff Says Smallville Could Live Past Season 9
The CW's Entertainment President Dawn Ostroff today spoke with the media at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Pasadena, California, and offered a shiny broadcast for the show's future.
"I hope it's not the last season," she said. "I think the producers have done a great job coming up with really good storylines this year, but I do think the show still has a lot of life left to it."
Regarding the show's Friday-night move, she says "this is the first year we're actually migrating all of our viewers to Friday night. We felt the best way to open up Friday night was with a big established hit like Smallville."
Ostroff does not know if Michael Rosenbaum will be returning to the show this year. "I wouldn't rule it out, but I don't know if it will happen this season," she said. "I don't know if we really actually had a conversation with Michael, but I think the idea was to keep the character alive and make his presence really felt." (Clearly she hasn't seen "Requiem.") |

Repost: A Reminder To PLEASE Check Out Smallville Season 7: The Official Companion!
In addition to working on KryptonSite, site webmaster Craig Byrne has written the four most recent Smallville companion books for Titan
Publishing.
The Season 7 companion book, which featured a Foreword by Laura Vandervoort (Kara), was released in October.
Unfortunately, a decision to make a Season 8 book has not yet been made, and chances are if sales on the previous books do not pick up, we might not get companions for Season 8 (or beyond)
So, if you've been "thinking about it" but just never got around to it, now is the time to PLEASE order a copy of the book from Amazon.com or go to your local bookstore to find or request a copy.
Personally speaking, and breaking from the editorial voice for a moment, I'd really like the opportunity to do another book and I KNOW there are a lot of unanswered questions about Season 8 that fans would like to see answers to. If sales go up, and the Amazon.com ranking goes up, they might have no choice but to go forward with more!
Order
your copy of the Season 7 book from Amazon.com!

you're in the United Kingdom, try Amazon.co.uk)
