Tess has really taken over Watchtower. Does this mean sparks might fly when Chloe finally returns?
I thought about that, but I really think that Chloe has some bigger fish to fry. I think that she knew what she was doing when she left, and she knew the sacrifices that she was making. I think that Watchtower was maybe on the lower end of those sacrifices, when it comes to Oliver, and Clark, and her friends, and her life. Allison and I haven't had all that much interaction yet, but I think that she'd be much more excited that the ball's still rolling, rather than being upset someone else is rolling it.
Did you ever suspect that Tess would turn out to be a Luthor?
We joked about it in the beginning, because I am naturally blonde, and my hair is dyed red for the show. I thought that it was just because I was affiliated with the Luthors, and because we already had a blonde and a brunette, but the fact that they made it really real, I think leaves a message for her. So I think the idea was always back there that it would be cool, but didn't know until this year that they were really going to do it.
Does this mean all this talk of "I loved you" talk back in Season 8 was just a sisterly love?
With Lex?
Yes.
Yeah. You know, it's funny. I've read some fan stuff of how they're like "Ewww! Brother and Sister!" But, you know, I never thought that my relationship with Lex was sexual. I always thought that was more of a mentor-mentee. That's why, in Season 8, I got so upset with Oliver when he insinuated that my relationship with Lex was a romantic one, because I was like "screw you. It doesn't always have to be about sex!"
One of the best parts of this season, to me, have been Tess's interaction with the clone. Can you talk about that, and how the young Lex has evolved?
It was great. It's funny; working with Jakob [Davies] who was the youngest one, it was so instinct-based. Because you're actually acting with this tiny little actor, who is so adorable. I didn't need help with it. I was holding this tiny little, adorably boy who is telling me he loves me. That's enough. And then to be able to see that, and really kind of fast forward. Not only his growing is fast forwarding, but also to be able to fast forward my relationship with him, has been cool. And Connor [Stanhope] was great. He was very knowledgeable of the series, obviously, because he's been on it, and so it's fun to have these people come back that have a shorthand of what it's like to be on the show.
Do you think Tess is annoyed that now everyone seems to know Clark's secret?
No. I think she's always been protective of him and his secret, but I don't think that she's annoyed. You mean the fact that Lois knows?
Yes, exactly.
No, not at all. I think she feels that secrets don't have to be kept, and now you can move on and do what you're going to do.
In one of the preview clips for the episode, Tess has been watching Lois while she's at the coffee shop, and Tess does a whole thing with a phone. What's that all about? Is that just to get Lois to come to Watchtower?
Yeah. That's just my way of calling her.
Now that you've worked in almost every set of the show, is there any particular set you're enjoying working in the most?
I really like the barn. I think the barn is a really homey set, and I think when I am there, it's usually for an emotional reason. I also like the loft in my office; the upper part of my office in the mansion. I like it a lot.
Has anything surprised you with the direction that Tess has taken in Season 10?
I was super surprised when she got invited into Watchtower. It's one thing to be forgiven, and trusted again. It's like being given an access key, and really trusted. I was surprised by that, and it gave me the opportunity to have a different relationship with both Clark and Oliver. One of a lot more trust, and that only allows for more interesting storylines and connections.
What, in your mind, is the coolest thing coming up for Tess that you're allowed to tell us about?
It's funny. I had a few episodes off after "Luthor," and so I'm really excited for tomorrow night. This episode was so much fun to shoot. Kelly [Souders] was so awesome as a director, and it really got to play a different side of a lot of us. It was like putting the show in a blender, and then pouring it out into a new world, and so I'm really excited for that.
Have the writers clued you in at all to where Tess ends up at the end of the story?
No, and I'm calling them daily! I've dropped hints. I'm all "So what do you think, guys?" And they're like, "We'll see." It's like a parent that won't tell you if you're getting what you want for Christmas.
Now that John Glover has come back, Annette O'Toole is coming back, and others are returning, do you have any words for Michael Rosenbaum, to try to get him to come back to the show?
Michael Rosenbaum, hopefully, has heard my words. My words are "get off your duff and get up to Vancouver, and do the job that all of us want you to do!" It's all love. It's a win-win-win if he comes back. I hope that he comes.
Smallville has a fantastic new episode, "Luthor," airing Friday night, December 3 at 8PM (ET) on The CW. Thanks again to Cassidy Freeman for participating in this interview. Here are some extras associated with this week's show that hopefully you will enjoy:
