Smallville's
"Ships"
Written

It's Valentine's
Day, and to celebrate, we thought we'd look at some of the "Ships"
- the favorite couples among Smallville fans. Here are just a
few that we thought we'd recognize and talk about (and if there
are any forgotten, you're welcomed to send
in an e-mail and yell at us!)
Basically,
there seem to be couples for every taste. Some you might see
below may disturb you slightly, and some may just make you giggle.
And that's just the Clana. Kidding :-) Anyhow, here's a look
at some of the couplings the fans have followed:
Clark
& Lana
It's inevitable but true. Executive Producer Al Gough refers
to Clark and Lana as "soul mates" and one can hope
that even though Clark and Lana are not together in the end,
the two will be important parts of each others' lives forever.
One thing's for sure - the powers that be will continue to give
us loft scenes for years to come, whether we like it or not.
Lana's the "perfect" girl that Clark has crushed on,
like, forever; Lana is the girl destined to be left behind,
who has in a way been cursed by being in Smallville all along.
Whatever happens with the two, there is something there - what
it is, exactly, may remain to be seen.
Clark
& Chloe
Other fans (usually older ones) seem to see more spark between
the Clark and Chloe characters. It's obvious Tom Welling and
Allison Mack have a good chemistry together, and that Chloe
is very much like the Lois he ends up with later in life. Unfortunately,
Chloe's ties to Lionel - even if they were broken - might make
furthering their relationship a bad idea. Also, truth be told,
Chloe deserves better. Clark often just treats her as his personal
information service, and only seems to take note of her when
a FOTW who looks mysteriously like the OC's Seth starts taking
a liking to her. On the bright side, though, the fact that Chloe
is Clark's friend could make her a good mate.
Clark
& Lex
The first time the two of them saw each other, their lips were
locked. Their "friendship" is the stuff of legends.
And how can we forget how jealous Clark looked when Lex drove
up with a new hot young thing (really Lucas, his brother) in
"Prodigal?" Intentional or not - and it may be sparked
by Michael Rosenbaum's intense desire to make Tom Welling laugh
- one could very easily look into the Clark and Lex "relationship"
and come to their own conclusions. Of course, since Lex has
chemistry with old ladies and pool cues, it's not that much
of a stretch.
Lana
& Adam
Well, at least until he started crying blood and threatening
people. One would at least have to admit that if Lana and Adam
had children together, they'd sure be pretty.
Chloe
& Pete
This thread was dropped pretty early on in the series, but especially
in the series pilot, it was obvious Pete had a soft spot for
Miss Sullivan. Now that Pete's usually limited to about 2 lines
per episode, this really hasn't been explored again.
Chloe
& Lana
If there are people who see subtext with Clark and Lex, there
are people who see it with Chloe and Lana - and not necessarily
just in "Visage." Plus, they have the same initials
as Clark and Lex, and really, if Clark's going to treat them
both badly, why not find solace in each other? File this in
the "never happen on the WB" file.
Lana
& Lex
This is a pretty new one, made slightly creepy by the fact that
Lex is several years older than Lana is. But the two of them
have had a hidden tension, hinted from even the series' beginning.
Now that things have evolved, it's obvious Lex has a soft spot
for Lana, even if at this point it isn't necessarily romantic.
But don't be surprised if, in a season or two, Lex and Lana
find interest in one another, which will help feed the eventual
rift between Clark and Lex. "Nicodemus" revealed Lana's
inhibition that there's something inside her that goes after
a rich bald man - and hey, she's seen him naked before.
Pete
& Lana
Even though Pete and Lana are married in the comics, their TV
counterparts have barely even interacted. We'll put this one
in the "not very likely" file.
Chloe
& Whitney
Whitney is dead, but there has been fanfiction written about
what if Chloe and Whitney actually ended up together. It would
be an interesting pairing, surely.
Lana
& Whitney
Though most were rooting for Clark in the Whitney days, it was
still obvious that the late character really did care for Lana,
which was brought to life very well by Eric Johnson's performance.
Chloe
& Lex
They've mostly interacted this season, but one must admit, two
curious minds could make a VERY interesting couple.
Jonathan
& Martha
They're married, but even without them saying it out loud, it's
obvious that Jonathan and Martha have a deep affection for one
another. If Jonathan's deal with Jor-El leads to tragedy, you
know Martha Kent will be heartbroken.
Jonathan
& Aunt Nell
We know that Lana's Aunt Nell and Jonathan dated back in high
school, but unfortunately, Nell was off the show before that
really got a chance to be explored.
Martha
& Lionel
Lionel could be the complete opposite of Jonathan Kent - and he
would use that fact to his advantage if he felt it would help.
He obviously has a soft spot for redheads, after all.
Lionel
& Lillian
Outside of the comic book, we've never seen Lex's mom, Lillian
Luthor, before. But from that one comic story we learned how or
why she could love that magnificent you know what.
Lionel
& Chloe
Okay, that's really a strange thought, but we WILL throw it out
there....
Lex &
Helen
Despite their relationship's start not going over too well with
fans, people warmed up to this couple. Too bad Helen had to be
a back stabber.
And there
you have it. 17 combinations of Smallville love, just in time
for Valentine's Day. Feel free to talk about what you read on
the KryptonSite
forum!
