It’s something that fans will debate for decades after the May 2011 season finale of Smallville… and the subject has come up again to Tom Welling, who revisited the Smallville finale and the choice to not go full-on Superman in the last episode of the series.
Welling made an appearance on CBS’ The Talk on November 3 where he again justified his decision… or tried, at least.
“One of the things when we started the show was that it was going to be about Clark in high school,” Tom repeated, as he has said before. “It was not going to be about Superman. So at the end of the series, it was about trying to put Clark in the position where you knew he was going to become Superman, but you couldn’t go with him. But we hope the fans felt like it was good that they knew Clark was out there being Superman,” Tom said.
When The Talk panelist Sara Gilbert asked Tom if he was happy with the ending, he said “very much so.”
“I wasn’t exactly excited with the idea of getting into tights anyways, so it worked out,” he said.
Tom Welling currently stars on Lucifer on FOX.
