One element that comes up in the Superman & Lois season premiere “What Lies Beneath” is what might be the first in-series mention of Lois Lane’s mother. For so long, we’ve seen just her father, Sam. The character of Ella (or in some cases, Ellen) Lane has appeared before in such series as Lois & Clark, where she was very much alive, and in Smallville, where she was very much dead and played by Teri Hatcher.
Will we see Lois Lane’s mother on Superman & Lois, though? We asked Executive Producer and Showrunner Todd Helbing that question when we recently spoke to him for an interview.
“I’m not sure if you’ll see her this season, but I would bet that you would see her at some point in the show,” Todd says. “I think [what happened with her mother] explains why Lois is able to compartmentalize so easily. Having tragedy like that happen at such a young age, if you sort of have to take the reins and just take control of your life and move on, or you’re affected your whole life. At an early age, Lois took on a lot and figured out that she wasn’t going to let it slow her down and ruin her life, and that explains a lot about why she is the way she’s the way she is,” he continues.
So… the answer is to be determined. One thing’s for sure: If they are going to bring Lois Lane’s mother onto the show, it is our hope that Dana Delany (the 1990s voice of Lois Lane) is the first actress that they call…
