The second episode of Superman & Lois airing on March 2 gives us formal introductions to a few characters. One of them is Adam Rayner’s Morgan Edge, who is going to certainly be an antagonist for Lois Lane as the series goes on. But, the episode also introduces us to a character who may become a great friend and ally to Lois — “Chrissy Beppo,” reporter for the Smallville Gazette, played with an almost Chloe Sullivan-like zest (without the real world weirdness) by an actress named Sofia Hasmik who was seen on Spectrum’s Mad About You update.
“Chrissy works so hard at the Smallville Gazette, and I think we’re all going to have this opportunity to really see her step into the position of an investigative journalist,” Hasmik said at a recent TCA panel for Superman & Lois. “She is very obviously and clearly inspired by her idol, Lois Lane, and I think wants to make her proud, and wants to make herself proud, and she really gains confidence from that. It’s also a nice reminder what like chance encounters can lead to, and where your life can go from that.”
(At this point in the Q&A Elizabeth Tulloch asked “Chance encounters… or stalking?”)
“A little bit of both; a smidge of both,” Hasmik shot back.
The character name at least may be familiar to fans of Smallville as “Christopher James Beppo” was the name of the author of the “Ezra Small Prophecies” for the Warner Bros.-produced Smallville Ledger website tying in to that show. Ezra’s “prophecies” sometimes gave fans early hints and spoilers. The character was visually seen in the Justice and Doom transmedia initiative for the series, and yes, at least the “Christopher James Beppo” character was named after the super-monkey. Hopefully we’ll have an official still of Sofia Hasmik as Chrissy Beppo soon.
