Early on in the filming of Superman & Lois, it was revealed that the offices of the Vancouver Sun doubled as a filming location for the famous Daily Planet interiors for scenes from the first episode of the show…. what might not have been so obvious, however, is what building was used for the paper’s exterior. Was it something we’d seen before, altered? What city is it in?
Thanks to Super-friend Bryan, we have an answer, which actually brings up something further: The city of Chicago was again used to double for the Metropolis skyline, as it had before in such films as Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. But the building itself — which seemed slightly evocative of the familiar building used in Smallville and Crisis on Infinite Earths — is also in Chicago, and it is no longer even an office building!
The building used for the Daily Planet is 310 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago, but the magic of visual effects changed the background of it. Interestingly enough, the building is called the “Metropolitan Tower” and was constructed nearly 100 years ago in 1924. While it wasn’t always the case, the building has been comprised of mostly residential units in recent times, in case you ever had a temptation to live inside the Daily Planet. The building has an interesting shape on its roof; not quite a planet, which may be the main reason the top of the building was unseen on the show.
You can see a picture of the real-life Metropolitan Tower below.
