As promised, there was more to our interview with Superman & Lois actress Tayler Buck (Natalie Irons) — you can read the first part here — and now that the episode “All is Lost” has aired on both coasts, we’re sharing Part 2! If you have not seen “All is Lost” yet, you might want to come back and read this later. If you have seen it…. read on!
KRYPTONSITE’S CRAIG BYRNE: What makes Natalie’s armor different or better than her father’s armor?
TAYLER BUCK: It’s coated in sort of an X-Kryptonite layer that gives it this extra layer of protection, which is why it’s practically indestructible. It’s so cool that she thought of that; she has this backup plan, just in case just in case Dad tries to destroy this, maybe I’ll add a little extra layer of protection. And also in case I actually go get to fight, this will come in handy. This will be helpful.
Can you talk about the advantage the new armor might have against Ally Allston?
I believe she’s able to draw power from people I believe, like a parasite. I think the armor with the protection won’t allow her to sort of do that to John or to Natalie, so that’s really cool, and I think it gives them that extra layer of protection that they need, to keep from possibly getting hurt.
How do you think Natalie is acclimating to everyday life in Smallville?
I think, like how we saw last episode, that she’s getting a better relationship with the boys in the Kent family. I think that sort of shows that she’s growing. We saw her at the beginning of the season, very much “me against the world.” She had a hard time getting used to seeing her mom who’s not really her mom being married to the man who killed her, that’s not really the man that killed her mom. So it was very confusing, and it was a lot to deal with at such a young age.
She’s had time to sort of take it into understanding and realize that “this is not my home planet, so everything’s not the same on here.” And I think she’s done really well for everything, considering her age, and what she’s had to go through, and everything being so close together. She hasn’t really had any time to take a break and really sit back and think about what’s happened. I, personally, think she’s been doing pretty good, and I think she’ll probably only get better in that she has a sense of home in Smallville.
What was the experience of PaleyFest like, and are you looking forward to more events like that in the future?
PaleyFest was super, super cool. You take a step back, and you’re like, “oh, my God, this is crazy. This is really happening. This is my job.” That’s insane. And getting to see the people who watch the show in person is crazy. It doesn’t really hit you – or at least it doesn’t really hit me. I think about it sometimes, and I’m like, “whoa, people watch me on TV? That’s kind of crazy!” So it’s a really cool. Of course, I’m looking forward to more things like that. It’s exciting, and it’s even more exciting now that I can finally talk about the suit.
Are you hoping for more of the sort of “sibling bonding” like we had in “Lies That Bind?”
Yeah! I think it was really fun. We sort of had a little Goonies moment in the mines, which was super fun to film. The sets on the show are absolutely crazy, and the caves were super cool. And I do love the bonding. I feel like it shows she’s sort of getting used to life in this small little town and getting used to these people, and over the course of this season, she’s grown.
What would you like to see for Natalie in Season 3?
I would like to see a relationship with her and Lois, or at least the beginnings of one. I’d like to see the growth over the course of the season. Realistically, it wouldn’t happen all at once. I’d like to see the relationships with everyone that she knows already, like the boys and Sarah. [With Sarah], we sort of saw their friendship at the beginning of the season. I’d love to see more of that. And of course, I would love to see more of her in the suit. I think it’s awesome. And more soldering! So fun.
Do you think she might ever be tempted to upgrade her father’s suit?
I mean, she only wants the best for him, and she only wants to continuously protect him. He’s all that she has left. So I think, possibly in the future, she would maybe look at that as being an option.
Do you think Season 3 could possibly bring any love interests for Natalie?
Oh, I don’t know! I mean, I’m open to it. I think that would be cool. Gosh, I don’t know, I’m really excited to read whatever we get for Season 3 when we get it. I don’t know anything, and I’m dying to know. It’s eating away at me.
Is there anything you’d like to tease as we go into the final weeks of the season?
There’s so much going on. I definitely action packed. There’s a big moment coming up for Natalie that I’m very excited about, and I’m very excited for everyone to see. Tune in and you won’t be disappointed.
