As we saw in last week’s episode of Superman & Lois, Jordan Kent is taking some Super-matters into his own hands delivering his own brand of hoodie-wearing Kryptonian justice! We’ll be seeing more of that tonight with a new episode of the show called “30 Days and 30 Nights” and we spoke with the actor who plays Jordan, Alex Garfin, for some thoughts on what we can expect!
Of course, some aspects of our conversation will have to wait until after the March 29 episode has aired… but to get pumped for what’s coming this evening, all you have to do is read this interview… enjoy!
KRYPTONSITE’S CRAIG BYRNE: How much discussion did you have with the producers and writers about Jordan taking on this vigilante direction?
ALEX GARFIN: You know, I think it was something in discussion for quite a while, only when this episode came out, our #1, our captain Todd Helbing called. He was very nice and gave me a bit of his time, and we just went through it kind of like, big step by big step. Also, I got to call the lovely Ian Samoil [director]; We had a conversation where we went through it page by page. Both those two men are absolutely brilliant, and they were a big help to bring in what we wanted out of this performance.
With Superman away in this episode, does Jordan feel like he really needs to step up?
Yes. I think the momentum of Superman’s crazy job carries on through Jordan. It becomes a thing like “if he doesn’t do it, no one will do it.” And that new responsibility cracks down on a young teenage brain and causes all sorts of things start coming loose. When you have a water bed, eventually it has holes, and water starts spewing out!
Is there a part of Jordan that wishes that Jonathan also had powers so they could do these things together?
I think all of Jordan wishes Jonathan had powers, I don’t think he’s selfish with it at all. I really think that he wants his brother to have the experiences that he’s having. Also, he doesn’t want his brother to have all of them, but he wants to share the load. It would be great if Jonathan did have powers. Personally as an actor, I do really like the dynamic that they have with one not having powers and one having powers. I think it grounds the show in the way that we’ve really been working to do. But Jordan? Yeah, he wants that.
How is Sarah responding to Jordan’s sudden disappearances?
Sarah responds to Jordan’s sudden disappearances by starting to question the cause. It’s easy to blame yourself. It’s easy to be like “am I doing this? Are you doing this? Is it because you don’t like me?” It’s easy to blame everything besides the actual reason, which has nothing to do with you. People – especially teenagers – don’t like to acknowledge that there’s a world outside of themselves.
Will we ever get to see Jordan hanging out with and maybe even being friends with Aubrey?
I think it is something that definitely might happen. He almost met her in Episode 8. But that remains to be seen.
How excited are you that you’ll be able to do events now like Comic-Cons and PaleyFest?
I won’t be attending PaleyFest. Scheduling didn’t work out… but it is super fun to do a Comic-Con. I can’t wait. It’s been an absolute pleasure meeting other people from other shows while I was out there. I met all the Trailer Park Boys which was super cool – I love those guys! And Bill Shatner… all the people have been going around that circus for a while.
I saw that at a recent convention you met the artist Tom Grummett, who drew the upcoming Superman & Lois comic book. How did that go, and how excited are you to see Jordan in a comic?
Oh my God, it was the coolest thing ever, right? When he’s drawing Jordan, he’s drawing me. Originating the character has that perk, and it was insane to see Tom Grummett drawing me! I mean…. are you kidding me? He actually had a copy with him since he was working on it while we were there. Actually [at the convention] he was on a panel, and I raised my hand. Everyone knew who I was, but I don’t think he recognized me. I asked “do you ever take inspiration for from TV shows?” and the entire audience started laughing. It was so funny!
Has there been anyone that you’ve met at any of these conventions that you would love to see guest starring on Superman & Lois?
I want William Shatner on. I say we get him on. I don’t know how or why, but it’s gotta happen.
What kind of teaser are you allowed to give for the rest of the season?
I think that the rest of the season is bonkers. It gets crazy. It picks up. It builds and builds and builds, and then oh, my God, the flood is coming! And you’d better be there for it, because it’s going to be really cool.
Our thanks to Alex Garfin for this interview. Superman & Lois “30 Days and 30 Nights” airs tonight (March 29) on The CW – see some photos here.
