The Supergirl season premiere is almost here, airing Monday night on The CW, and the season premiere introduces Tyler Hoechlin as Kara’s cousin, Superman. The premiere is called “The Adventures of Supergirl” and it’s very much still Supergirl’s show, but many might wonder: Was there any concern that Superman might overshadow the title character of her own show?
“I wasn’t worried about it, to be honest,” Melissa Benoist admitted during a press call held late last week. “I thought it was the natural progression of our story. We spent last year solidifying how she wanted to approach being Supergirl and being a hero and being her only living family member, and I think that’s kind of a necessary relationship to explore for both characters, and it was really rewarded us as a cast, I believe, because you not only get to see how amazing the relationship between Clark and Kara is – or I should say Kal-El and Kara – but you see how he has relationships with everyone on the show. He has history with a lot of them, and some of them he meets for the first time and it’s hilarious – like Winn. I think it’s only going to reap benefits, and I think Tyler Hoechlin is perfect in the role.”
“I think whenever you’re around someone else in another superhero suit, it always feels ridiculously awesome. I felt that way with Grant [Gustin] and definitely with Tyler, seeing the two glyphs together… it felt familial; it did, and it felt pretty amazing. It felt like ‘oh, man. There’s not a lot of people who get to do this. That’s pretty special.’ We were super excited about it. Some days it feels like another day at the office, when you’re in the Supergirl suit for like four days in a row at the DEO, but outside and flying with Superman, yeah. That’s cool.”
Has the show changed in the move to Vancouver for Season 2? “In some ways more than others,” she said. “Now, we’re in a different country, so that’s quite a big change, but it’s sort of nice; it’s really solidified the cast. I think we feel closer than we did, because last year in L.A., we’d go and live our own lives outside of work, but this year, we’re kind of all stuck up here [in Vancouver] – not stuck, I mean, we’re here gratefully, but we’re up here kind of as a unit, and it’s really solidified our relationships as a cast. Day to day in the storylines, we’re all really, really happy with the scripts. There are really exciting new stories, and every character is afforded a lot to really dig into that everyone is really excited about and fulfilled by. Yeah, little small things have changed and we had to move to a new city, but it’s really good. I think it’s all for the best and the show is really better off for it.”
