In our years of covering Smallville and Superman-related television, we had been able to talk to actresses Laura Vandervoort and Helen Slater, both of whom played Supergirl in the past. We even spoke with Adrianne Palicki of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this weekend, and she once played a “sort of” Kara in the Season 3 finale of Smallville.
This weekend, though, we had a special treat by participating in Supergirl interview roundtables, and the first of those interviews is being shared today: The lovely Melissa Benoist, who plays Kara Zor-El a.k.a. Supergirl on the new CBS show, which premieres on Monday, October 26.
“Obviously, that’s a daunting feeling to arrive at a point where this is a character that is so developed and so many people already love. So there’s a responsibility, and I arrived wanting to stay true to all of that. What I wanted to bring is I love her humanity. She is an alien, [but] I love that she really has a lot of discovering to do, and growth, and makes mistakes. I think she’s so relatable, and I just want to stay true to that.”
She reveals what scenes she auditioned with, what ways she trained, some stunts, and what it’s like to be in the costume. “I feel like a different person,” she says of when she is in the suit. She also occasionally shares that infectious laugh that makes Kara Danvers so likable.
