"Metropolis isn't the cutback, you know. People
in the city are always looking to make a quick buck. If they
find out about you they'll put you in a laboratory and..."
Eddie Jones
was working as a service station attendant in Los Angeles when
a friend invited him to attend an acting class. Very much a
novice to the acting world at the time, Eddie had only seen
one play prior to his first experience on stage.
His
first television appearance was as Dr. Matt Steele on the TV
series "The Young Dr. Malone" in 1958. In later years
he would go on to appear on shows like "Cheers" and
"Spenser For Hire," as well as in films like "A
League of Their Own" and "The Rocketeer."
Then,
he and K Callan would, of course, play Clark Kent's parents,
Jonathan and Martha, on "Lois & Clark." This would
mark the first time in a live action adaptation of the Superman
legend that Clark's parents did not die before he left Smallville
(the original version of Superman's origin had his parents dying
when he was a young man, though in the 1980's the comics were
re-written so that his parents were still alive). This gave
Eddie and K a chance to truly make the roles their own, as these
characters had never been fully developed on screen before.
They became a staple of the series, offering comfort and advice
to their superhero son.
After
"Lois & Clark" had ended, Eddie went on to do
appearances on "The Invisible Man" TV series, "Touched
By An Angel" and "Party of Five," and films like
the David Duchovny/Minnie Driver romantic comedy "Return
To Me."
Mr.
Jones continues to occasionally appear on stage, and he can
most recently be seen working with another actor who is no stranger
to red and blue superhero tights - Tobey Maguire, in the film
"Seabiscuit."
