Kristin Kreuk Speaks Out About Smallville Love Triangles

Kristin Kreuk spoke out about Smallville love triangles in a recent TalkVille Podcast appearance.

If you visited KryptonSite or its forums back in the day when Smallville was still on, the largest debates always seemed to involve which female Clark would end up with. Would it be Lana? Is it Chloe? Or could it be Lois, once she arrived on the show? Sadly, that often broke Smallville fandom into factions, based upon which character one preferred to see or “ship” Clark with.

Recently on the TalkVille podcast, Kristin Kreuk (Lana) expressed her annoyance with the whole situation. (This podcast interview was done long before the current SAG/AFTRA strike.)

“I loathe a love triangle,” Kristin stated. “I only like a love triangle when it’s done well.”

“I think it sometimes is a cheat. I think that it creates drama,” she continued. “I think we had a lot of rules back in the olden times where you couldn’t bring your characters together or the show would die, and so we found all these ways to extend these storylines, and I have been so allergic to love triangles since Smallville that I have tried on every show I worked on to kill the love triangles. I hate them so much.”

There’s another reason Kristin wasn’t a fan of the love triangles on the show. “On Smallville, it pit us all against each other. Every woman on this show was hated [in the fan community] depending on which girl they liked. If they were a Chloe fan, they hated me. If they were a Lois fan, they hated Chloe.”

“They all hated us, and so we had to deal with people that loathed us, because they saw us only as if our worth [as characters] was determined only by who Clark liked at a given moment. It just reduced all of these women to ‘does Clark like them or does Clark not like them’,” she continued.

Annette O’Toole’s Big Smallville Regret

Annette O’Toole discusses her biggest regret from her time on Smallville.

Smallville’s Annette O’Toole recently spoke with Salon magazine about her biggest regret from her time on the show. It’s a topic she has discussed on the TalkVille podcast, and it is something she talked about in KryptonSite’s interview to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series premiere.

Basically, it was the notion that she never was able to share scenes with Christopher Reeve. While the plan originally was for a scene between them in the Season 4 premiere “Crusade,” in the two appearances that Reeve did make on Smallville failed to reunite O’Toole with Reeve, which is a shame, as Annette played Lana Lang to Christopher Reeve’s Clark Kent in the film Superman III.

“I never understood it,” she said. “I should have picked up the phone and called the producers and said what are you thinking? You’ve got the prior Lana Lang and Superman. Why aren’t you putting them in a scene together? It kind of broke my heart. It was kind of like ‘if they don’t see, I’m not gonna tell ’em! They don’t understand!’ So who’s regretting it? Not them. I knew it would be the last time I’d ever get to see Chris, so, yeah, I’m very sad about that.”
