Superman & Lois actor Jordan Elsass who will play the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane “Jonathan Kent” recently visited the FTTV Podcast where he spoke a bit about the audition process for the upcoming CW series as well as a certain superhero show from the past that he loved.
In the interview, Elsass mentioned that the show won’t start shooting for “a few months” — though some editorializing from this writer, hopefully we’ll still get a sizzle reel or pilot at May Upfronts time. Here are some highlights:
Jordan initially was trying out for… Jordan Kent. “I had an initial self tape that I sent in, and then there was a second self tape. They actually switched characters. So originally, my castmate Alex [Garfin], I auditioned for the character he’s playing, Jordan, which is my name in real life, which is funny. And so that was the original audition tape, and then I did a second one for Jonathan. I went in for a screen test in front of Warner Brothers, and then there was a network test in front of CW, and that was the final step in the audition process. It’s a weird thing, because I’ve never auditioned or been that far along in the audition process for a network show,” he said before explaining how some of it was very different for him compared to moments in his past.
He learned that he was cast while at the commissary at the Burbank Studios with his mother. “I got a call from my agents, and they were just like, ‘guess what, you got some good news. You are moving to Vancouver to do this show.’ I was just blown away,” Elsass recalled. “I was just ridiculously humbled beyond words. It was crazy. It was a rush.”
Always holding on to Smallville and possible comics inspiration: “In all honesty, I’m not too familiar with the Arrowverse as it is right now. Going back to the TV shows I would watch when I was younger, Smallville was one of my absolute favorites. It was very similar to this, right? In [Superman & Lois], Clark and Lois move back to Smallville with their sons. But going off that I mean, yeah, something like this, I want to delve into those comics to at least have that there if I need to draw from that,” he said.
Will Superman & Lois make Superman cool again? “I think the beauty of this show is that it’s going to be a little bit less about Superman as Superman. It’s more going to be about Clark Kent as Clark Kent. I think that’s the beauty, and that’ll make the character more relatable for people. That’s going to bring a whole fresh new take, having to deal with these family issues. It’s going to be a whole new side, I think to, Clark/Superman that we’ve never seen before,” Elsass promised.
Favorite DC superhero? “Personally, I m a fan of Superman, [but] I’d say Batman has always been my favorite and yes relatable for me personally, but also still in the DC universe as a whole,” Jordan said. “[With] Superman, I like I said, I loved Smallville, one of my favorite shows, ever, for sure, but I liked that Smallville focused more on Clark Kent growing up. I think that’s going to be the beauty of this show as well, now that it’s focusing on adult Clark Kent, but you also get to, of course, see him as Superman in a lot of the show, and that’s always fun. I think that you’re getting the best of both worlds.”
