DVD Review: Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law Vol. 3

A few weeks ago, Warner Home Video released the classic animated series Birdman and the Galaxy Trio onto DVD. That show inspired one of my personal favorite series, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. The third Harvey Birdman volume hit stores this past week.

Basically, Harvey Birdman takes the classic character and makes him a lawyer in very bizarre situations, such as a domestic-partnership case involving Race Bannon and Dr. Benton Quest, or the kidnapping of Magilla Gorilla from a pet store. So many classic Hanna-Barbera characters, including some from the Super Friends like Black Vulcan and Apache Chief, make appearances. It's a lot of fun.

In addition to Birdman and his trusty bird sidekick Avenger, there's Peanut (nee Birdboy) and, with increasing frequency, Birdgirl, who is actually Phil Ken Sebben's daughter Judy. A running gag has Phil Ken Sebben constantly trying to seduce Birdgirl. (As an aside, PKS is voiced by none other than Stephen Colbert).

Odd episodes in this one also include a Sebben and Sebben "training video," a "lost" episode from the original series (not really, but made to look like one), and a ton of extras, including a guide to the show's recurring gags.

The DVD packaging is consistent with previous volumes, and the interior case is just as bizarre as the ones that have come before. The episodes are great - leading all the way to the recently-aired final (sob!) episode, "The Death of Harvey Birdman." But hey - before he goes out, we get to see him, Birdgirl, and Birdb-- err, Peanut superheroic action!

This particular set I'd give an 8.5 out of 10 from pure enjoyment alone, but really, this cartoon is not for children and it's probably better for someone who's familiar with the old Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. You also have to have a somewhat odd sense of humor to like it. Fortunately, I do. I'd recommend this set to anyone, though you might want to start with the first volume to see where it all began.

Oh, and one final comment - It's a shame Harvey Birdman never got the attention that shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force did. I think it was just as good, if not better. ("Ha, HA! Better.")
