UPDATE: In case you didn’t figure it out, this is KryptonSite’s April Fool’s gag for 2019. It’s not what it happening… unless there’s something we just don’t know.

Sometimes stories are so big it’s worth risking the wrath of the Warner Bros. legal department to push this out… and this is a big one.

We may end up getting shut down for this, but it felt too important to share: KryptonSite has learned about The CW’s plans for this year’s Crisis on Infinite Earths mega-crossover, which, despite launching in late November, will actually be filming in July before all of the series start with their regular season filming. This also allows them to land some guest stars…. and, oh boy, there are some big ones.

But let’s start with what might be the absolute biggest thing: This year’s crossover is a five-night event. Yes, you read that right. Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning are all part of the action this year, with their tie-in episodes actually airing before their respective midseason premieres, but also, it seems WB/DC are pulling from the comics for inspiration. Years ago for the Blackest Night crossover, DC revived some of their classic titles for one issue and one issue only… and, well, it’s happening again.

Smallville Episode 219, everybody. And that’s not all.

New episodes of The Flash 1990, Birds of Prey, and Constantine are also included in the mix. We are assuming that this is being done to ignite more interest in the DC Universe streaming service which hosts many of those classic shows (except, no Smallville… yet).

In addition to returning series, we have also gotten a hold of an internal document detailing additional actors that producers are pursuing to reprise roles that they have not played in decades. This list includes stars of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Superboy, and a few DC Comics-related movies. Conspicuously missing from his most famous role is Justin Hartley, the Smallville star who now stars on NBC’s This Is Us. Asking around, we have been told that contractually, an appearance is impossible, but permission has been given to use unaired footage from the Mercy Reef/Aquaman pilot so that Hartley will be seen as Arthur Curry at least for a period of time in this event. Stars from several DC Universe series also appear to be at least making cameos in the event, if the cast list is to be believed… and we are most excited to see Brec Bassinger’s Stargirl on the list. We also hear that, like how the original Crisis on Infinite Earths took place after the conclusion of the long-running Flash comic book series with #350, this Crisis actually comes after a grounded Arrow series finale the week before.

There are also some people on this list where we don’t see character names being listed, which is a bit… interesting. And, in what seems to be a nod to the Peter Parker cameo in the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic, it appears 1970’s Spider-Man Nicholas Hammond is being courted to play “Peter Palmer.”

It’s also interesting to note that, like John Wesley Shipp’s Flash appearing in Elseworlds, there are several instances where actors who have already played other characters in the Arrowverse are playing multiple characters. We assume that this will be explained at some point. A world where “Ray Palmer” looks like Superman? Won’t someone notice that Supergirl looks like Indigo? This will probably all be explained, and obviously, it would be impossible to get all of the actors being pursued, or else the budget would balloon to Titanic numbers. It’ll be interesting, though, to see who comes through.

Before we get to that guest star list, let us share the leaked loglines of the four revived series in this year’s event:

SMALLVILLE Episode 219: “Absolute Crisis”

It has been two years since Clark Kent was hit with gold kryptonite, rendering him powerless. Clark Kent (Tom Welling) has hung up his cape, seemingly for good, while still battling injustice alongside his wife, Lois Lane (Erica Durance). Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) is President of the United States and, despite noble intentions of keeping the Crisis at bay, is unable to stop the chaos that comes with the red skies. Also: What does the disappearance of Chloe Sullivan have to do with Earth-1’s Felicity Smoak? Starring Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Erica Durance, Aaron Ashmore, Laura Vandervoort, Annette O’Toole, Michael McKean, Serinda Swan, and Kyle Gallner.

THE FLASH 1990 Episode 23: “Flashback”

What led to the Crisis on Earth-90? The experiences of that world’s Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) are explored as an entire Earth faces its final moments. Starring John Wesley Shipp, Amanda Pays, Alex Desert, Mark Hamill, Richard Belzer, Paula Marshall, and Joyce Hyser.

BIRDS OF PREY Episode 14: “Lost and Found”

Seventeen years ago, the Birds of Prey protected New Gotham against villains including Clayface and Harley Quinn. Now, Helena Wayne lives as “Helena Bertinelli,” leaving that past life behind, until the Oracle (Dina Meyer) calls the Birds of Prey back into action. They’d start a revolution if they can get up in the morning… which had better hurry up, so they can stop the Anti-Monitor…. and a long-missing hero returns. Starring Ashley Scott, Dina Meyer, and Rachel Skarsten with Bruce Thomas as OnStar Batman.

CONSTANTINE Episode 14: “End of the Line”

The John Constantine of Earth-14 is not the same man who travels with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow — so who is he? Will his dangerous habits seal his doom before the Crisis? And will the combined help of Chas, Zed, and a figure from John’s past bring him salvation? Starring Matt Ryan, Anjelica Celaya, Charles Halford, and Derek Mears, and introducing Jack Gillett as Young John Constantine.

So with that out of the way… who is on this list of potential guest stars? We’re going to try to group them by project they’re best known for, but this list is extensive, so, be ready, and again, know that being courted doesn’t necessarily mean they will all pan out:

Teri Hatcher (Lois Lane), Dean Cain (Clark Kent), Justin Whalin (Jimmy Olsen), Michael Landes (Jimmy Olsen), K Callan (Martha Kent), Eddie Jones (Jonathan Kent), Matthew Daddario (??), Lynda Carter (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Lyle Waggoner (Steve Trevor), IRAC (computer), Helen Slater (Supergirl), Annette O’Toole (Lana Lang), Marc McClure (Jimmy Olsen), Terence Stamp (Zod), Sarah Douglas (Ursa), Jack O’Halloran (Non), Gerard Christopher (Superboy), John Haymes Newton (Superboy), Stacy Haiduk (Lana Lang), Justin Hartley (Aquaman), Tom Ellis (Lucifer Morningstar), Lauren German (Chloe Decker), Brenton Thwaites (Dick Grayson), Anna Diop (Starfire), Ryan Potter (Beast Boy), Teagan Croft (Raven), Brec Bessinger (Stargirl), Brandon Routh (Superman), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), Sam Huntington (Jimmy Olsen), Cameron Cuffe (Seg-El), Shaun Sipos (Adam Strange), Colin Salmon (General Zod), Adrianne Palicki (Wonder Woman AND Power Girl), Sean Pertwee (Alfred Pennyworth), David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne), Robin Lord Taylor (Penguin), Camren Bicondova (Selina), Alexander Siddig (Ra’s al Ghul), Shaquille O’Neal (Steel), Burt Ward (Batman of Earth-66), Lee Meriwether (Older Selina), Jack Bannon (Alfred Pennyworth), Tara Strong (??), TBD (Static Shock), TBD (Bette Kane/Flamebird), Eric Martsolf (Booster Gold), Crystal Reed (Abby Arcane), Nicholas Hammond (Peter Palmer)

Returning guests from current shows: Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally West), Violett Beane (Jesse Quick), Calista Flockhart (Cat Grant), Floriana Lima (Maggie Sawyer), Beebo (The God of War), Ciara Renee (Hawkgirl), Wentworth Miller (Citizen Cold), Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak), Kat McNamara (Mia Smoak), Colin Donnell (listed as “Earth-2 Tommy”), John Barrowman (listed only with a question mark), Jessica de Gouw (Huntress), Joseph David-Jones (Connor Hawke Earth-64), Katrina Law (Nyssa), Jon Cryer (Lex Luthor – though we also see “Luthor of Earth-3” listed)

The document we saw revealed that the involvement of the Doom Patrol in the crossover was already filmed a few weeks ago in Atlanta and will be inserted into the finished product. It is also expected that some of those actors may appear in the Black Lightning chapter, as that series also shoots there. It is also floated as an idea that Encore is toying with creating computer-generated Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder to make brief appearances from afar. Additionally, the paperwork we saw was redacted, but it appears they are trying to get an actor from the current DC Extended Universe to make an appearance…. and we’re not sure who it may be. If we were to guess from the size of the black box over the person’s name, we’d say it’s probably Ezra Miller’s Flash, which would be quite cool if we’d get to see him speeding alongside Grant Gustin. Also, it looks like the Birds of Prey chapter was supposed to revive Lori Loughlin’s Black Canary but her real-life personal issue prevented that notion. We’re also curious how Smallville will deal with the lack of Chloe, and are a little disappointed to not see Kristin Kreuk on the list.

Also, we can’t wait for Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl to meet Helen Slater’s! And how will Oliver Queen react to a Zod that looks like his former stepdad? Why is Kate Kane’s sister’s doppelganger one of the Birds of Prey? Should be interesting! And damn them for finding yet another excuse to keep Tom Welling out of a Superman costume.

And then finally, we have a schedule for what airs on which night. Since Arrow is in its usual Monday slot, we wonder if Oliver Queen truly will die in the Crisis, since otherwise we would have thought it would be the final chapter.

If you can’t wait for this and/or are as excited as we are, come talk about this on our forum!

Sunday, 12/1: Supergirl, Flash 1990
Monday, 12/2: Arrow, Smallville
Tuesday, 12/3: Flash, Black Lightning
Wednesday, 12/4: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Constantine
Thursday, 12/5: Birds of Prey, Batwoman

Worlds will live, worlds will die… and nothing will be the same. And neither will we once WB Legal finds out we got a hold of these documents! As such, please contact us before reposting this news on other websites.

Marc Guggenheim on Why We Didn’t See Smallville’s Fate in Crisis on Infinite Earths

Arrowverse showrunner Marc Guggenheim discusses why we didn’t see confirmation of Smallville’s survival at the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Published

on

In late 2019, Smallville returned for one scene only in The CW’s multi-show Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, as Tom Welling and Erica Durance reprised their roles as Clark Kent and Lois Lane in an episode of Batwoman. The scene took place on “Earth-167” and was written by Smallville veterans Don Whitehead and Holly Henderson, but many fans were left wondering why we didn’t get to see that the characters from Smallville were restored at the end of the crossover, where we learned that other Earths such as the ones occupied by Swamp Thing, the Titans, and Brandon Routh’s Superman had been brought back into the multiverse by Stephen Amell’s Spectre.

Andy Behbakht of Multiverse of Color had Arrowverse showrunner Marc Guggenheim on his Showrunner Whisperer podcast which dropped part 1 today, and he addressed the omission.

“Why didn’t we have Smallville? I’ll be honest with you. I think it was two reasons,” Guggenheim responded. “Number one, it never occurred to me until I got the question on Twitter that people think we did blow up the Smallville universe. So part of it was that, and part of it was, we’d obviously seen Clark and Lois in episode two. For the most part, the ‘going around the horn’ [closing sequence] was to see all the universes and all the characters that we didn’t get to see,” he continued.

Guggenheim confirmed that if he had it to do all over again, that it would be “awesome” to have a shot of Lois and Clark on the farm kissing within that sequence. “But yeah, sorry, I dropped the ball on that,” he admitted. Additionally, under SAG rules, an actor gets paid for each episode they appear in, and Tom Welling was only contracted for the second episode. “We certainly didn’t have the money for that, but that really wasn’t a factor. It, quite frankly, just didn’t occur to me,” Marc said.

Smallville’s Tom Welling Discusses His Crisis on Infinite Earths Return

Tom Welling discussed his return as Smallville’s Clark Kent from Crisis on Infinite Earths at a recent TalkVille live event.

Published

Four years later, fans are still discussing the return of Tom Welling as Smallville’s Clark Kent in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover that aired on The CW, and earlier this week, Tom Welling spoke about that opportunity at a live TalkVille event held in Hollywood.

“They had asked me to kind of bring Clark into some of the other shows, and it didn’t feel right,” Tom recalled. “But when they sent me [the “Crisis” script] they were like, ‘just read it.’ It was one scene, and I read it and I was like [sigh] ‘this is a really good idea’.”

Tom talked about how the Batwoman crew wasn’t familiar with the Kent Farm location, so he was helping them at the same time. But as for playing Clark again?

“It was really fun, because I was able to kind of bring Clark back again, but a little more grown up,” he said, noting that he tried to have mannerisms like John Schneider had as Clark’s human father Jonathan Kent on Smallville, with the gloves and the way he walked. “My favorite part of the whole thing was Jon Cryer and he says ‘I’m Lex Luthor’ and I’m like ‘you’re not Lex.” That line was a lot of fun… one of the easiest lines I’ve ever said, because this is Lex Luthor,” he continued, pointing at Michael Rosenbaum on stage.

Most importantly, Welling seems happy with where the Crisis on Infinite Earths story took Clark.

“It was really great, and I thought as a fan of Clark, this fits the tone in which would see him again,” he affirmed.

You can watch video from the event below.

Marc Guggenheim Answers Two Smallville-Related Crisis Questions

Arrowverse architect Marc Guggenheim has answered questions about Michael Rosenbaum and Erica Durance’s Smallville roles in Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Published

on

Arrowverse architect Marc Guggenheim has been releasing a fantastic Substack newsletter called LegalDispatch in recent months, and with this week’s edition, he answered some Smallville-related questions regarding the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover — specifically, what Michael Rosenbaum‘s Lex would have done if he had shown up, and also, if there were more plans for Erica Durance to appear as Lois beyond her brief scene with Tom Welling.

Being transparent, Marc answered some of those questions! First, regarding what role Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex would play:

Well, here’s the thing. By the time we’d engaged with Michael about appearing in Crisis — thanks in huge part to Stephen Amell’s efforts — we’d already shot the Smallville reunion scene in Hour 2. Nevertheless, I was eager to get Michael’s Lex into the story if I could, so my brain started working on options that could be fit into the episodes that we were still shooting.

I forget the story impetus for them, but I noodled with a version where Michael’s Lex would interact with Jon Cryer’s Lex, which I think would’ve been quite entertaining had it come to pass.

Also, was there any temptation to have Erica Durance’s Lois Lane appear in more than one episode?

There was absolutely a temptation for sure. As with most things, however, we were subject to the limit of a combination of screentime, story requirements, money, shooting schedule, and the actors’ personal schedules.

You can read this week’s LegalDispatch here.
