introducing the Featured Trade Paperback (TPB) of the Week (tm). Despite
the release of a TPB this week, with this being our first FTPBOTW we are
starting with the story which sets up the new post-Crisis
version of Superman (pre-Crisis fans, we'll get to you later).
THE
MAN OF STEEL
By John Byrne and Dick Giordano, introduction by Ray Bradbury
This is the major turning point in the mythos of the Superman character.
For good or bad, this collects John Byrne's revamp of Superman. This is
not a reinvention of the character. This is Byrne's attempt to return
the character to its origins. He strips away much of the mythos that built
up after Siegel and Shuster left DC, returning the character to the less
powerful sole survivor of a totally alien planet. If you want to know
what the modern Superman is all about, this is where to start. His first
meeting with Batman. His first meeting with Luthor (and it is not in Smallville).
His first meeting with Lois Lane. This sets up the past 15 years of Superman
stories. A must read for anyone new to the character.
Reprints The Man of Steel issues 1-6. $7.50 (unfortunately out of stock
at Amazon.com)

Superman For All Seasons
Smallville explores the story of
a young Clark Kent and his place in the world on television. In the comics,
this was very well illustrated in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's "Superman For
All Seasons." This has been labeled a "must read" by many fans and also
listed as the favorite Superman story of recent years by many. Check it
out!
Superman: Peace on Earth
Were you impressed by Alex Ross's recent TV Guide covers
featuring Smallville? Thought so. In 1998, Ross painted the oversized
Superman:
Peace on Earth graphic novel which is written by Paul Dini of Batman:
The Animated Series fame. Every page is worth framing. Ross
also painted similar books for Batman,
Wonder
Woman, and Captain
Marvel.
