Just in time for the Canadian Upfronts, Cameron Cuffe (Seg-El from Syfy’s upcoming Krypton) spoke with CTV’s etalk and gave some hints about what the show will look like as well as what makes being a Kryptonian something special.
“I think that we’ve built this world which is so exciting on so many levels,” Cuffe said of the new series in which he plays the grandfather of Kal-El and father to Jor-El. “There’s loads of action; there’s a lot of political drama as well as personal drama, so there’s a lot going on in the show.”
“I think people have an idea that Krypton was this Utopian society, and indeed, while elements of it are highly advanced, there’s a lot of shades of gray at play,” Cuffe continued. “There’s no mustache-twirling villains; there’s no true-blue hero. It is what it is, and it’s a fascinating world.”
Seg-El’s journey, indeed, is a complicated one. “Seg grew up in quite a prominent family, one of the great houses of Krypton, which very early in the story is thrown away from the light and cast down to the lowest cast in society,” Cuffe said. “So we have this once-mighty legacy which has sort of been thrown into the mud, and he is trying to survive, and trying to regain that honor that has been taken from him.”
As those who have seen Cameron’s Twitter feed can attest, the actor has been a Superman fan for quite a while… what they may not know is that he has been reading comics since he was 8 years old. “It’s a pleasure to be part of this grand multiverse that I’ve always loved. It’s a responsibility that I’m really proud to live up to,” he said.
“The best things about Superman aren’t the powers or the costume or the cape,” he explained. “It’s being a moral indiviudual, being a good person, and doing what you can to help. If you feel the need to help, you should, and that’s what this story is all about.”
You can watch the entire video below, where Cuffe discusses the new Wonder Woman movie, the aesthetic of Krypton, and more. Hopefully we’ll have a premiere date for Krypton soon; right now it’s looking like 2018.
