Blu-ray Review: Supergirl: The Complete First Season

The Complete First Season of Supergirl arrives this Tuesday, August 9 on Blu-ray and DVD. The Blu-ray set contains all 20 episodes from Season One on three discs in addition to a number of special features.

What did we think? Here’s our review.

The Episodes: I thought Supergirl looked good enough on broadcast TV, but actually, on Blu-ray the picture (and the visual effects) look a whole lot better. Episodes look like movies yet at the same time don’t look so distractingly perfect that it takes you away from enjoying the show. I was very, very impressed.

I’ll be honest: The first episode I jumped to was “Worlds Finest,” the excellent crossover with The Flash…. and I loved it just as much the fifth time around. There are a lot of highlights in Season One, though, and I especially like that Supergirl is a show that the entire family can enjoy. With the show moving to The CW, you’ll want to be caught up, and this is certainly the best way to see it. I know I gush about “Worlds Finest,” but there are special moments in all 20 of the episodes.

The Extras: There are extra deleted scenes from Red Faced,” “Hostile Takeover,” “Blood Bonds,” “Strange Visitor From Another Planet,” “For The Girl Who Has Everything,” “Solitude,” “Falling,” “Manhunter,” and “Worlds Finest.” I was surprised there wasn’t anything taken out from the pilot or season finale that they could find and add here, but it is nice to have some new Supergirl, of course.

I really liked “The Man From Mars” featurette about J’Onn J’Onzz, and there is also a feature about Krypton that ties in a bit to “For The Girl Who Has Everything.” Additionally, there’s a gag reel, and there are highlights from Supergirl’s introduction at the 2015 Comic-Con. Considering this was a 20-episode season that wrapped a while back, I think this is a decent amount of extras, though I would have really enjoyed commentaries on key episodes like “Pilot” and “Worlds Finest.”

Packaging and Graphics: This stuff is good, with the new DC Bullet making an appearance on the box art. There’s a little booklet inside listing the episodes which is so much nicer than “printing on the inside of the box.”

Is It Worth It? YES. This set looks really good, I love the chance to revisit Season 1 of the show, and it all generally makes me happy. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment did a good job.

Supergirl: The Complete First Season is surely on Blu-ray and DVD by the time you read this! Order yours from Amazon.com at a discounted price and support KryptonSite!
