Flashback: How Smallville Celebrated Thanksgiving

From the archive, actors recall the Smallville Thanksgiving scene from the episode “Rage”

Smallville celebrated Thanksgiving on November 9, 2006 with an episode titled “Rage” and underneath its proto-“Green Arrow on Mirakuru” type story featuring Justin Hartley’s version of Oliver Queen, it also contained one of the simultaneously most memorable and absurd scenes of the entire series.

“Our family has a tradition. It goes back way before I was even born. Where everyone takes a moment to say what they’re the most thankful for in their lives,” Clark Kent (Tom Welling) says before giving a toast and saying what he’s appreciative for.

It was a nice family moment with the extended Smallville family, something the series did very well, but most interesting about it is the presence of Lionel Luthor (John Glover) who had tried to kill almost everyone at the table at one time or another.

KryptonSite’s Craig Byrne spoke with Smallville cast members about this scene for the Smallville: The Official Companion book for Season 6.

“It was fun,” Annette O’Toole recalled. “It was one of those parties where you invite people who never in a million years would be together, and it makes for a much more fun party. I wish that we’d gone into the Thanksgiving dinner and seen what these people were talking about. If you’re going to have them there, then let’s have some fireworks. Let’s say, ‘Well, what about it? Why did this happen? I’ll drink some wine and get a little loose.’ That would have been great.”

John Glover also had fun memories of the filming of that particular scene.

“We had a wonderful time shooting it. You should have seen Justin messing with Erica. He was being so ornery with her. Just keeping her off guard, and pulling the rug out from under her all the time. We were doing a lot of improv, and talking about the brussel sprouts. Then I said ‘Miss Sullivan, how much longer are you going to be jailbait?’” Glover laughs. “Allison just looked at me, and Annette laughed. It was a lot of fun,” he said.

Warm Thanksgiving wishes to you and yours from KryptonSite — if you’d like to see the scene that the actors were talking about, you can find it below.

Creation Announces Salute to Smallville 2025!

Creation Entertainment has announced their second Smallville convention, happening September 2025 in the Chicago area.

In October, Creation Entertainment hosted their first-ever “Salute to Smallville” convention – featuring such guests as Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance, Laura Vandervoort, Aaron Ashmore, and John Glover. The first event was a fantastic experience for all, with fans and talent alike having a great time surrounding themselves with others who love Smallville. Like Creation’s Supernatural “Creation Tour,” friends were made, friends reunited… and we can’t wait to do it again. As a bonus, KryptonSite’s very own Craig Byrne (the writer of this article!) got to host/emcee the event with our good friend and Starkville’s House of El podcaster (the OG of SV Podcasters!) Derek Russell.

Well, you’re in luck: Today, Creation formally announced their next Smallville event! Held September 13-14, 2025 in the Chicago area, the second “Salute to Smallville” has already announced that Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Erica Durance, and Kristin Kreuk are scheduled to attend, with more to come — and the announcement comes with a new website which should have a somewhat familiar design. (Full disclosure: It was purposely designed to look like KryptonSite, and it was largely put together by the author of this very article.) As a bonus, the new website includes some exclusive short videos from last month’s event!

Even better: Gold Weekend Experience passes are already available to order for the absolute best seats, the exclusive Gold Panel, and additional perks. If you order yours now you can be the among the first to sign up, and ideally, to show Creation that we’d like to see more of these things! Several autographs and photo opportunities are also up to pre-order, so you can get in before they all sell out. Frankly, ordering now also shows Creation that putting together this new website was a good investment, as well, which would make this author extremely grateful.
