A
Smallville DVD collection might not be available for a long time,
but KryptonSite webmaster Craig Byrne still offers his two cents on what
he would like to see....
A
Smallville DVD? Opinion
Piece by Craig Byrne
With
rumors of a European Smallville DVD release already starting to
surface, it's had me thinking of what I'd *really* like to see on a DVD
here in the United States. Many TV shows have already gone the DVD route,
some spectacularly (The
X-Files,The
Simpsons,The
Sopranos); and others in a somewhat bare-bones manner (South
Park, Ally
McBeal). The thing is, like Lex Luthor's plans for his own future,
I don't want a Smallville DVD to be a good thing -- I want it to
be a *great* thing.
Here's
what I'd like to see on a Smallville DVD, should there be one:
*
The Complete First Season. 'Nuff said. All 22 episodes,
plus the extras I've listed below. * Widescreen Option -- I've
heard some rumors the pilot was shot in widescreen format. I don't know
this for sure, but if it's true then that would be great to include. *
The Original Pilot with Cynthia Ettinger -- If the music
in the original pilot can't be used that's fine; but it would be great
for the millions of fans who *didn't* see Ettinger as Martha Kent to see
how the scenes originally looked. * Deleted Scenes -- I'm not
sure if there are any; but there *is* a scene in the original promotional
"trailer" for the show -- something said by Cynthia Ettinger's
Martha about "the two people who love him the most" -- that
never appeared in either cut. Obviously I'd love to see it. Perhaps there's
material for other episodes too that was cut in the interest of time or
content -- for example, we never did see that frozen girl from the "Cool"
trailer. * Promotional Trailers/Commercials --
I'd like to see all of the promotional trailers and commercials from the
show, from the pilot on, included as extras -- much like the X-FilesDVD's do. * Smallville
Ledger & Torch Archives
-- "Reproductions" of the popular web pages,
completely archived for DVD use. Say you just saw "Hothead,"
you could just call the Archive right up and see what happens. * Commentary -- It sounds as
if Alfred Gough, Miles Miller, and David Nutter have done the commentary
for the pilot. But what about commentary for future episodes? I'd like
to hear what some of the actors or even guest stars had to say. * Cast Member Screen Tests
(if applicable)
Hopefully
someone at Warner Bros. will read this and realize the instant cashflow
such a collection would bring.
Superman For All Seasons Smallville explores the story of
a young Clark Kent and his place in the world on television. In the comics,
this was very well illustrated in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's "Superman For
All Seasons." This has been labeled a "must read" by many fans and also
listed as the favorite Superman story of recent years by many. Check it
out!
Superman Transformed! In 1997 the creators of the Superman comics altered Clark's
powers. Since it's a given that Smallville's
Clark may be dealing with at least one electrical wraith, here's where
you can find out what happened when things turned shocking for Superman.
It's also good if you were away from the comics for a while and were wondering
what that blue Superman thing was all about.
