Gough & Millar In Smallville
Magazine #7: Highlights!
Issue
#7 of Smallville Magazine is now starting to hit newsstands.
This latest issue features Tom Welling (Clark) on the cover,
with a feature about Clark Kent inside.
The
magazine also includes interviews with executive producers Alfred
Gough & Miles Millar, executive producer Ken Horton, and
now-departed Smallville writer Mark Verheiden.
In
the Gough/Millar interview, the two talk with editor Richard
Matthews about the fourth season. Here are some highlights:
On
casting Lois Lane:
Gough: "It's always tough when you're casting iconic
characters, like Clark, Lex, Lana and now Lois, that everyone
thinks they know and when, quite frankly, there have been other
versions of the character that have been fantastic. Margot Kidder
is still the benchmark for Lois Lane and Teri Hatcher is really
good in Lois & Clark in a very memorable career-making performance
to her. For us, it was how are you casting the person who will
become Lois Lane? They need to have all of those qualities but
be someone who hasn't fully formed that personality."
On
Clark and Lana having a relationship:
Millar: "If you look at the Clark/Lana relationship,
it's actually extremely destructive for Lana. Going out with
Clark, it's really pretty horrible for her, falling in love
with someone who can't tell you the truth and you know that
they're hiding something from you. There's a lot of angst for
Lana that is pretty damaging. Why does she take it from him?
You look at the reality of it - his lies, constantly changing
personalities...." Gough: "It's a relationship where
they seem like they should be together but Clarks' not capable
at this point in his life of making sacrifices that he needs
to to be with her. And now, we've introduced Lois and seen the
moment where he meets the woman that he will ultimately end
up with, who can frankly roll with the punches of his crazy
life."
On
the original plan for "Transference":
Gough: "Transference was an idea we had from season
one and we never found a way to do it." Millar: "The
[original] idea was Clark changing bodies with a fugitive or
a mass murderer."
On
a plan for Martha and Lionel, that we haven't seen yet but hopefully
it's in the works:
Gough: "She's [Martha] taken over the Talon and gotten
out of the house. When Lionel came out [of prison] a changed
man, obviously the first person he's gonna try and convince
he's changed is Martha, because she's always had a soft spot
for him." Stay
