Annette
O'Toole In Smallville Magazine #14
Issue #14 of the Official Smallville Magazine is now
hitting newsstands and comic book stores. It offers the latest
in Smallville news, interviews with Erica Durance (Lois
Lane), Annette O'Toole (Martha Kent), and Paul Wesley (Lucas
Dunleavy-Luthor), and writer/producers Kelly Souders and Brian
Peterson, a look at Brainiac in the comics to screen, an exclusive
story, and much, much more.
Here
are some highlights from Abbie Bernstein's interview with Annette
O'Toole:
About
Martha no longer being so prone to keeping quiet: "I really like not having much dialogue, because then
I'm free to think what I think and for the audience to hopefully
pick up what I'm thinking. But I do feel [as Martha] I've been
somewhat muzzled because of my love and devotion to Jonathan.
I think a lot of times, she disagreed with him mightily [but]
she really knew how to keep the peace. She didn't compromise
her standards at all, she went along with something she believed
in, but it's not the way she'd have gone about it, let's say
that. She would do things differently, but she always took into
account, 'Well, wait a minute, what would Jonathan think about
this?' I'm looking forward to having her be a little more vocal
- I hope, depending on how it's written - we'll see!"
On
Lionel and Martha: "I don't know what they're going to do. I certainly
hope they don't do anything too quickly, because Martha's been
married for most of her life to a man that she absolutely adored,
so it wouldn't be right for her to have those feelings. She's
very attracted to Lionel. I think in a lot of ways, they're
more suited as a couple than she and Jonathan were. But she's
not in love with Lionel' she doesn't trust him - it's sort of
like the fascination you have for a snake. They're very beautiful
and you can't stop looking at it because you're scared to death
of it."
On
new interactions: "Yesterday, I did a scene with Allison [Mack as Chloe]
and Erica [Durance as Lois]. I don't think I've ever done a
scene with just the three of us. And we had such a wonderful
time. And then I did a scene about three weeks ago just with
Allison. I'd never had a scene just with her before. And that
was great. They're so mature in their work; they're not like
young, starting-out actors. Tom [Welling as Clark] in the very
beginning was, but he got over that really fast and absorbed
everything that he had to do veryt, very quickly."
