Issue
#10's lead feature is an interview with Erica Durance about
her first full year on Smallville. Here are some
excerpts of the interview, which was done by departing Smallville
Magazine editor Richard Matthews:
Looking
back on her first year: "I feel great. It's been a really cool ride and a crazy
year. It was not expected to be 13 episodes -- it was four and
then it went to 13 -- so it was kind of all over the place,
but I feel good and I am excited to get on with the new year.
I've got a little bit of an idea [of what will happen] and I'm
excited to get in there and explore more of Lois and see where
they're gonna take her. With the last episode that we shot,
showing her watchng everything that's happening, you don't really
know where she goes or what she does, so for me the excitement
is seeing how this moment of tragedy is going to add a new color
to her character."
On fan
reaction: "I definitely believe the fans that watch the show often
know more about Lois than I do," laughs Durance. "When
they say 'I think you're doing a good job,' and you're accepted
into that kind of group it is definitely encouraging and it's
helpful. But it's a balance, because you can't always gauge
everything on that basis, because if, for example, they don't
like where your storyline is going [they] can sometimes [get
that] confused with how you're playing it, which is a different
thing: how it is written and then how the actor plays it to
make those words work."
About
fan worries: "They were worried about Lois coming between Clark and
Lana, but they seem to have gotten over that. That's why I feel
like I started to relax, and people realized that and relaxed
too, and I did feel a certain amount of acceptance. It definitely
did affect how I went in and I did feel better about it, but
thne you've got to block it all out and do your work. The feedback
is lovely and I don't dismiss it, but I also believe that what
carries you through the day is 'Can you do your work and go
home and hopefully not be too neurotic about it?'"
Who is
right for Clark - Lois or Lana? "Both...?" Durance giggles. "Every man likes
the woman who makes things difficult for him, challenges him
and makes it interesting, but they also like the woman who's
soft and loving all the time. They sometimes like both ends
of the spectrum. But Lois can be soft, too, and Lana's been
tougher this year so I'll just say both... He can have both.
I'm not gonna fight! Make the fans happy."
