FANS REMEMBER "LOIS & CLARK"
Here's what some of you had to say....
Sarah/LoClLaKe: "What a long, strange trip it's been. I
first started to watch L&C midway through the first
season...although I'm proud to say that before that I wasn't
watching SeaQuest or the Simpsons or Murder, She Wrote. I simply
hadn't watched it until then because of the immature hickness of
the other ABC shows....little did I know, Lois and Clark was the
complete opposite of the ABC stereotypical family hour show. Once
I started watching, I became a full fledged FoLC immediately. My
family had recently gotten AOL, and I spent my free time chatting
with other FoLCs. My friends began to question my sanity. I taped
every episode. Basically, as I said, I was a FoLC. I even wrote
some fanfic and made up a couple of annoying acronyms (does
anybody remember MAMOSOH?)...which is why I'm surprised to hear
myself saying that I'm not devastated with the show ending.
"I began to lurk somewhere around the end of the second
season....I remember I was still in chatrooms before that,
because either Dan or Craig came into the chat and invited us all
to join (that was before the word had spread like
wildfire...probably one of the earliest members of the Krypton
Club, I still have the first issue I got - #5) I was totally
enthusiastic when I learned that they (L&C, of course) would
marry, but maybe I shouldn't have been. I still don't believe
that the marriage made the show, as some of my lesser friends put
it, "suck," but I do believe that the marriage made the
writers think that Lois had to obey Clark...basically become a
typical ABC sterotypical woman (with the exception of Roseanne),
which did make the show "suck". (Not compared to other
shows, compared to its former self). It's not that I stopped
caring...I just learned it was better not to think about the
L&C disappointment than to continue protesting it....kind of
like LCWS.
"But over the past few days, I've found that the FoLC within
has revived itself. During math, while the teacher talked of
permutations and combinations, I found myself doodling the season
guide (complete and detailed) on looseleaf. Walking down the hall
today, I saw an upperclasswoman wearing a shirt identical to a
tshirt my aunt had specially made for me - with the first L&C
trading card printed on the cover, and shouted "I HAVE that
shirt!"....sure she laughed at me, my friend called me
crazy....but.....it excited me. Anyway.....
"I'm sure you guys will be getting tons of these, and
basically I just wanted to "talk" to somebody about
this recent revelation, but I did have another purpose.....I
wanted to thank you guys, and all the other FoLCs out there too,
for being. (And that was the end of the sentence)."
Katie/Sunny624: "L&C, L&C- my favorite show for
almost four years. Gone.
"Gone. And we didn't even get to say good-bye.
"I can't clearly pinpoint when I became a Fan of Lois and
Clark- I remember seeing bits and pieces of so many episodes
before I finally settled into the comfortable routine of FoLCdom.
I clearly recall a Sunday night in fall of '93, the day I had
bought "Aladdin" at the grocery store. I was dying for
my parents to see it; while I waited for them in the family room,
eating Cream of Wheat and working on a short story, something
strange was on in the background, a new TV show, apparently about
Superman and some girl named Lois- and some random bad guy,
testing the Man of Steel's powers. It was witty and clever, and
had it not been for the "Aladdin" appointment with my
parents, I would have been instantly hooked.
"From that point on, I started making an effort to watch
Lois and Clark, even if I was galactically stupid regarding the
Superman mythos (I had to ask my aunt what Kryptonite was
<g>). I can't say I was REALLY hooked until Barbarians at
the Planet, when I became, okay, I'll admit it, obsessed. BATP
was the official beginning of my fixation, and I fondly remember
that, even then, I was employing the VCR in my quest to see a new
episode (my mother wanted to know why on earth I wanted to tape
"that Superman show." My big explanation- well, I'm
going to miss it and I like it- didn't hold much weight back in
my early days of FoLCdom.)
"As my love of L&C grew, I grew increasingly worried
about my own mental health- here I was, a computer-less twelve
year old, rotating her life around a TV show, screaming at
"annoying stuff," taping episodes and replaying any
"cute" scenes, especially those with romantic
allusions, twenty or thirty times in a row. I had never seen the
words "gutter," "PoLC/FoLC/RoLC,"
"WAFF," and "WHAM," at least not in the
context of L&C; I thought I was the only person in the world
harboring an obsession for Lois and Clark. I was fixated with
ratings, as FoLCs are apt to be, but I didn't know most of the
nitty gritty, since my ratings reports came from the little
Nielsen chart in the Wednesday Edition of the Philadelphia
Inquirer. Basically, I was an ignorant seventh grader with a
thing for guys in tights. [::kersplash::]
"Then I got a computer, and everything changed- just
yesterday, I found myself lecturing my mother on ABC/Disney
monopolies, FCC regulations, demographics, Nielsen numbers and
shares, foreign markets, and lots of other bits of TV minutae no
fifteen year old in her right mind should be able to quote as
gospel. I can go splashing in the gutter with the best of them,
keep my acronyms straight, and have even mastered the fine art of
nitpicking every last detail of an episode. Unusual skills, yes,
but skills to be proud of nonethelss.
"I tried to retire from FoLCdom just recently, to set my
sights on the real world and accomplishments therein. For days, I
steered clear of my computer, spent all of my time on
"real" activities- and wanted to rip my hair out. The
truth is, no matter how bad things get, there's no staying away-
once a FoLC, always a FoLC. There is an invisible bond among us
all, the thousands of FoLCs the world over, even those who think
they are alone, those who still don't realize that the internet
is full of people like them. We are the FoLCs- co-conspirators,
fund-raisers, ad-publishers, fanfic writers, Top Ten list
composers, newsletter editors, self-appointed promotionalists. .
.friends. To me, L&C means friendship. No matter how much of
a headache FoLCdom has been, the bottom line is- I wouldn't trade
it for the world. :)"
Shira: "No, tell me its not true! How stupid are those
people?! How can they finish like that such a beautiful, amazing
T.V. show, who was so loved by all of us the regular viewer who
cant stand to miss even half an episode! By the way my name is
Shira I'm from Israel & although I havent written to you so
far I do enjoy getting the wonderful newsletter of yours. I just
had to spill my anger on someone & who would understand me
better than you?! IT CAN'T BE OVER!!!!"
Stephanie Carlucci: "It'll take a long time to get used to
life without L&C. It's hard to believe that it was only 3
years ago that I started watching, it seems like L&C has been
a part of my life forever. I remember the first time I saw
L&C. It was during the end of the first season. My sisters
were watching it and I walked into the room demanding that they
change the channel because I was not going to watch "a
stupid show about Superman." Well I lost that fight and I
was forced to sit through it. After a few minutes I stopped
complaining. Lois and Clark was actually a good show. It was
better than good! When the episode ended I was disappointed and
greatly humbled. Of course I didn't let my sisters know right
away how much I liked the show, bu the next Sunday when they
wanted to watch it, I didn't complain. Gradually it became me who
fought to tune in to what was quickly becoming my favorite show.
I love Lois and Clark for so many reasons. At first I was a
casual viewer and L&C was fun because at lunch every Monday
two of my best friends, who also watched the show, and I would
talk about it. At the end of the second season I was hooked. I
would read everything and anything I could get my hands on about
the show. I loved the incredible dialogue between the characters,
the fact that Lois was such an intelligent, strong woman who
wasn't afraid to speak her mind. Of course I wouldn't be honest
if I didn't say one of the reasons I loved the show was because I
got to see Dean Cain every week. But more than that I love the
escape from reality that Lois and Clark offered, the incredible
joy I would get from watching it, and the hope it gave me that
one day I too, like Lois, would find my Clark. Last March I
installed AOL and I discoverd the ABC L&C area. I love
L&C because of all the wonderful people I've talked to and
have gotten to think of as friends because of our common
interests. I take pride in calling myself a folc and I will never
ever forget the wonderful people I've met. Folcs are among the
kindest people in the world, and I thank all of you for sharing
your creativeness in newsletter, fanfics and many other ways with
me. I have so many wonderful L&C memories, the time my friend
and I made a cake and threw a party for the almost wedding, the
time we went skiing and went down a trail called "Honeymoon
Lane" and dedicated the run to our favorite show, going to
the ECP party and meeting so many great people (especially you
Andrea), meeting Michelle online to write fanfic together over
the summer, having fun conversations and trivia in the chat
rooms. I have so many wonderful memories of L&C and I'll
always look back on it and feel a warmth in my heart. As I'm
writing this the tears are flowing and I think it's probably time
to stop. I'd just like to end by once again thanking all you
wonderful folcs and I'd like to thank Dean, Teri and every member
of the cast and crew for giving me such wonderful memories."
Simon Fleming wrote a poem about L&C's end... it follows....
Lois & Clark, we'll miss you,
Now that you've gone.
Our hearts feel so empty,
The days seem so long.
You were a beacon of light,
That now has been been dimmed.
Through ABC's incompitence,
And a thick headed executives wim.
Teri, we will miss you,
With your smiling face.
You would thaw the coldest heart,
Esecially when you wore lace!
We'll all miss you Dean,
With your red cape,
Flying through Metropolis' sky.
Making the world safe.
We have made so many friends,
Through Lois & Clark.
We don't want that friendship to end,
We don't want it all to go dark.
But we must be grateful for,
The time that you were here.
You'll forever be in our hearts,
We'll always keep you near.
Maryam Shahdi: "Ever since I saw the old Superman movies I
fell in love with with the whole idea of it all, and when Lois
& Clark first aired, I was there from moment one and I knew
instantly my heart was lost forever to this super guy in tights
and one fistey little reporter. We have had four great years
happily following Lois and Clark through all the good times, and
crying through the sad. I was horribly disapointed when I found
out L&C was not going to return next season just as I know
all the other
FoLCs were. And all though we probably won't hear from them
again, I have to thank everyone involved with Lois & Clark
for four spectacular years."

SINCE NEW EPISODES OF "L&C" WON'T BE ON IN THE
FALL...
...You'll still be able to find some old favorites hanging
around. NBC's new sitcom "Union Square," which sits in
the cushy "before-ER, after-Seinfeld" timeslot, will
not only feature the scuzz we all loved to hate (or he played the
character we loved to hate at least), Jim "Dan
Scardino" Pirri, but it will also feature none other than
Michael "Matt will kill me if I say the real Jimmy"
Landes! See what happens this fall, and if *this* Jimmy will
throw Scardino down a flight of stairs, Thursdays this fall on
ABC. Just as long as Michael doesn't get shafted a THIRD time (we
are, of course, referring to his being replaced on
"L&C" and two years later, when he was replaced
during the retooling of the sitcom "Ink").

ASSIGNMENT: DAILY PLANET: ASSIGNMENT #4!
Just a reminder that the latest "Assignment: Daily
Planet," where YOU write the final episode of "Lois
& Clark" in fanfic format, is still on! How you'd do it,
what characters would be in it, etc. It can be as short or as
long as you want; it doesn't matter (but, the shorter the
better).... the only request is that you send it in the form of
an e-mail rather than as an attached file! You have until June 30
to respond, so that's plenty of time. If we get a good enough
response, we'll send one fanfic per week over the next several
weeks and at the end of the run we'll ask you to vote on which
one you liked best.
We're still not sure on the prize (but there will be one
doggonit!) Keep reading.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: ONE YEAR AGO....
One year ago, in Krypton Club Newsletter #117 (May 23, 1996), the
dust was still settling from the tearful cliffhanger of "Big
Girls Don't Fly." Thus began the third dreadful summer of
Lois & Clark Withdrawal Syndrome, and that was what inspired
"WshIWsLois" to write this top ten list, as we dip into
our archives once again....
TODAY'S "L&C" TOP TEN LIST! By WshIWsLois
Here they are, the top ten things FOLCs did after watching
"Big Girls Don't Fly"...
#10. Called mom, but forgot to wish her Happy Mothers Day.
#9. Spent some twenty minutes trying to telepathically contact
Teri & Dean while holding videotape, then logged on to AOL
and hopped from chat room to chat room shouting their names.
#8. Drowned sorrows in 2 liter bottles of Pepsi.
#7. Drove to the grocery store to get more kleenex.
#6. Went to church and added all FoLCs, Lois, and Clark to the
prayer roll.
#5. Ransacked the kitchen looking for chocolate -- upon coming up
empty handed, opened the new can of cake frosting and dove in.
#4. Took two Advil and called it a night.
#3. Rewatched the last 9 minutes 45 seconds of the show three
more times just to cry some more.
#2. Composed a 2 page long post to the Listserv about whether
Clark finally lost his patience.
And the #1 Thing FoLCs did after watching BGDF...
Calculated the number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds left
before the Season Premiere, based on the assumption that it will
air on September 15th. Then calculated it all again just in case
it
doesn't air until the 22nd.

TONIGHT'S TRIVIA!
Here is "L&C" trivia question for tonight...
What was the name of Lex Luthor's "personal assistant"
in "Barbarians at the Planet" and "The House of
Luthor?"
The answer to #164's trivia: The two DC Comics super-heroes who
have been referred to in "Lois & Clark" have been
Batman (a Batmobile reference in "Don't Tug On Superman's
Cape," a mention of "Batman" in "The People
V. Lois Lane," and a Gotham City reference in "We Have
a Lot To Talk About") and Wonder Woman (in "Faster Than
A Speeding Vixen").
