Smallville's
Director Talks To Dreamwatch Magazine
(7/30)
Smallville director
David Nutter was interviewed in the August 2001 issue of Dreamwatch
magazine in an excellent three-page interview by Frank Garcia,
and we have gotten permission to post some bits from that interview
here.
Here's
some of what Nutter had to say about the show:
On
the Smallville pilot
(written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar): "[It] was brilliant!
It's really the story of Superman. I loved trying to tackle an
attainable goal that makes the series really ambitious. It's got
a much larger scope. I think Superboy
was more of a kid's show. It was a great training ground for a
director. It was a lot of fun doing that stuff. I really enjoyed
it, but as far as this show is concerned, there's a much larger
scope to it. The world we're trying to create has to be real for
the audience. My hope is to make Clark Kent as real as possible
so teenagers can relate to him as a person, and not as a comic
book character."
On
Kristin Kreuk's audition tape: "I watched her on the tape
and called to see her again. I couldn't believe how great she
was. I showed the tape to everybody and they all agreed. The studio
and everyone else went nuts."
On Michael Rosenbaum, who's playing
Lex Luthor: "He's a great Luthor. He's really just a young
kid. Lex is not like a madman. He's a young guy who's brought
up alone for a very long time. Lex is another character that's
very accessible. You see the seedy origins of this evil guy."
