Return to the Script page

So what's the verdict? Was Bruce Wayne as good as folks like Ain't It Cool News said five years ago?

The answer is a resounding yes. As presented, assuming the show would be well-cast and there wouldn't be any network interference, the pilot script for Bruce Wayne was wonderful. Perhaps because that time period of Batman hadn't been well documented as of 1999, it had an allure that would have made for great TV.

In the "script pages" I commented about how much I loved the portrayal of Alfred, but I've got to also give props to some of the other characters. Selena Kyle was barely seen, but in her brief moments, you could tell there was a future for her. Jim Gordon's portrayal was probably the best we've had outside of the comics. And Harvey Dent - and keep in mind I'm picturing a Michael Rosenbaum type in the role - was such a fun character, and it would have meant a lot as a viewer to get to know this guy and know the horrible things that happen to him later in life.

And Barbara Gordon, precocious teen? I love it! Sure it's not Dina Meyer, who will always be my favorite live-action Babs, but I think I'd live. I also enjoyed having a younger Lucius Fox - I know Morgan Freeman will be an entirely different take, but the inclusion of lesser-known Bat-characters like him or Harvey Bullock made me a happy man.

Bruce Wayne as it existed here was and probably would still be a great companion for Smallville on the WB line-up. It's a pity it'll never happen, but on the bright side, at least we FINALLY have a good Batman movie franchise again.

Hopefully no one involved with the production of Bruce Wayne feels stepped on or intruded upon by the placement of this pages, and no Warner Bros. lawyers get angry for infringement - after all, this is a project that never existed and otherwise would be unknown to a lot of fans. And hey - these pages are also meant as a reminder to SEE BATMAN BEGINS (now in theaters!) or watch Smallville, moving to Thursdays at 9 on the WB this Fall.

It's fun to imagine a Bruce Wayne TV show though, isn't it?
