Respond To "Clark Kent"
From Planet Krypton
#225 (September 25, 2000)
The recent
announcement of the new upcoming WB series featuring Clark Kent
as a 15-year-old brought forth some responses from newsletter
readers. Here's what some of them had to say. If you'd like to
have your say printed here, feel free to still write. Most of the
fan response (so far) seems positive.
"I think if it's done well (like the first couple of
seasons of L&C), then it would be great. Anything that tells
a good story and has fantasy aspects is good television." --
Jennifer/Batgirl72
"I think this series sounds like a fun idea. Actually,
it sounds a lot like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However Buffy is a
show I enjoy greatly and I think Clark as a teenager could be
equally fun." -- Andrea/AndiFoLC
"Personally I am very excited about seeing this program
come to screen. It's all fantasy anyways, so why not play around
with the story a bit and bring Lois and Lex into his life
earlier. I do hope they keep the romance of the Lois and Clark
series in the new program. Will he be a modern day 15 year old
chasing all the girls like the kids on Dawson's Creek, or the
more old-fashioned "shy boy" type of guy that we've
always known Clark to be." -- MissTanith
"Do I think this Clark Kent series is a good idea? No.
I actually like the concept in and of itself. But I can't see it
working very well under most conditions. Lois & Clark had a
premise that you could take in a number of directions. It could
be a mystery/crime show if you focused on the journalism angle.
It could be a romance when they finally got Lois and Clark
dating. It could be a Superman show. And a lot of the things that
Lois & Clark did well were not being done by other shows at
the same time.
From the discription we've got so far there won't be a Superboy
so stright super-hero stories are unlikely. There might be
romance but since it is a teen drama I don't explect to see
anything permanent developing (or even being possible). More
likely we'll get a Lois/Clark/Lana/Luthor "triangle"
which won't be resolved to keep up suspense.
And the show has too much potential for becoming derivative since
unlike Lois & Clark it already has core elements that are
core elements in existing shows. Playing up the sci-fi elements
makes it Roswell and playing them down will lead to it being
Dawson's Creek or one of the other shows of that ilk. Make it too
campy and it's a Buffy rip-off.
I could be wrong and this could be a great show. I really hope I
am wrong, too. But, there have been too many shows I got hyped
aboiut early on that quickly fell into predictability." --
Jon Clark
"I think that the Clark Kent series is a great idea.. this
can help look at Lois and Clark from a new point of view.......
had they brought back the same show, not many people would be
enthusiastic about it. Lois and Clark is an old and classic
story.... this new story is good as well....targeting a young
audience.. and who couldnt use a bit of humor?" --
TajMahal17
"I think anything with Clark Kent is a great
idea!!!!!!!" -- SUPRBABI
"A great story should never be left alone. Great stories
are meant to be shared over and over. So, I eagerly await this
new incarnation of the best superhero ever, Superman. He's
already proved his ability to hook generation after
generation." -- CFind1955
"Well, I think it's a good idea. I mean, this won't be a
Lois and Clark story. This'll be a new take on the mythos.
"Lois and Clark" focused on Lois and Clark's budding
relationship. This story will focus on Clark getting used to his
powers (from my understanding at least) So, the 2 topics are
unrelated. Although, since Lois wasn't technically introed til he
went to Metropolis........ will she be a replacement for Lana or
something?
Anyway, I think it's a good idea & I, for one, will be
watching it <g>" -- Sharon/LNCTNAOS
"I absolutely think that this show will be fun to watch
on TV. I am highly addicted to most of the WB's teen shows
(although no longer a teen myself) and will really enjoy watching
a new take on the Superman/Clark Kent phenomenon. If the WB is
excited about the pitch then I am too. I worked for a production
company in Hollywood for a year and I know for anybody to sound
that excited about a pitch, it probably has great potential. I
can't wait to watch it. Do we have any idea when the show is
supposed to air? 2001-2002 season?" -- Jennifer Martin
"I like it." -- Kevin/BenSisko3
"I think it would be a good idea for another Superman
series at some point, and maybe one about him being a teenager,
my only concern will it be aimed too much for the teenage and
children audince like other shows on WB. If so I probably
wouldn't enjoy it, even though I'm generally into anything
Superman." -- Rowan/LaneKent
"Hey there, looks like with this good news all the
"Superman" Fans and Sites are gonna get a second wind.
Very exciting news." -- SmanFan
"Personally, I think it would be great if they could do
this and still fit it into the L&C continuity. Obviously,
though, that can't happen. To do a Superman show without Lois
Lane, or Lex, or any of Superman's supporting cast, wouldn't
really fly (no pun intended). Although I wish the new show could
stay true to L&C, keep in mind it was seven years ago that
L&C debuted. Let's give this new version a chance. If it can
make me feel as excited about Superman as the first season of
L&C did, then I will be hooked." -- Russ/CKent15
