Al
Gough On Relationships, "Justice," & More
Interview
conducted by Craig Byrne - KryptonSite Webmaster
January 2007
KryptonSite's
Craig Byrne caught up with Smallville Executive Producer
Alfred Gough at the CW's party for the 2007 Winter TCA
Press Tour. The party came only one day after Smallville's
ratings success for the "Justice" episode.
In this
brief interview, Al talks a bit about relationships, "Justice,"
spin-offs, and more. The interview follows:
KRYPTONSITE
WEBMASTER CRAIG BYRNE: Can you reveal anything that is going
to happen with the show's various relationships?
SMALLVILLE
EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ALFRED GOUGH: I think it's been a really
good year for the relationships. Certainly the Chloe and Jimmy
[relationship] has worked out really well, opposite Oliver
and Lois. Lex and Lana, certainly from a storytelling point,
has been really juicy and given us a lot of story. I know that
there's a big fan contingent of Clark-Lana fans who don't like
it, but look. The fact that they'll send us 250 letters of protest,
at least tells me that they care, and they're still watching
the show.
K-SITE:
So you did receive all of the things that they had sent
you?
AG: All
of them. We got it all. I think Clark-Lana fans should keep
watching, because it's a drama, and the triangles change.
K-SITE:
Is Lana Lang ever going to be let in on Clark's secret?
AG: You've
got to keep watching. Also, stay tuned for episode 13 "Crimson."
[There are] some interesting developments in that episode.
K-SITE:
Were you happy with how the Justice League episode turned
out?
AG: Thrilled.
I think Steve DeKnight just hit it out of the park. He wrote
and directed a fantastic episode; he got teriffic performances.
It was a lot of work to get that to all come together, and to
have it come together in such a great episode, I think one of
the best of the series... It's gratifying, the fact that we're
in Season Six, and you can still do an episode that's one of
the best of the series. It's a morale boost, and obviously,
the numbers being great... it's exciting.
K-SITE:
Will we see any of the Justice League characters again by
season's end?
AG:
You will. Not all of them together again. We'll definitely see
the Green Arrow again before the end of the season.
K-SITE:
Is a Green
Arrow spin-off still a definite "no?"
AG: At
this point, there are no plans for any spin-offs.
K-SITE:
If no Green Arrow spin-off is planned, is there any chance Justin
Hartley could become a Smallville regular at some
point?
AG: I
think with these things, like last year with Milton Fine, the
arcs run their course, and the fact that you leave people wanting
more is great. Justin's got a big career ahead of him, and if
anything, I think we've been able to expose him to a prime-time
audience. He is a total TV star, and a great guy.
K-SITE:
The Martian Manhunter makes his first full appearance on
Thursday night's episode. Can you tell us if we'll see the character
again after this week?
AG: Martian
Manhunter will definitely be back this season.
K-SITE:
Any more specific hints about when we may see him?
AG:
No. [laughs]

in that one as well." New episodes will air through February
